t a thousandmiles from St. Paul and Duluth, to the east, andPortland to the west; fifteen hundred miles fromChicago, and about the same distance from SanFrancisco. It is open from June fifteenth to Sep-tember fifteenth. Firearms may be carried through the Park, to beused only as a means of defense against wildanimals. Permission to carry them is granted, onapplication to the United States guards. A fewbuffalos are to be found here, thousands of elk anddeer, many bears, black, brown and grizzly, someantelopes, a few coyotes and small game. ThePark is under the control of the government. Itsfort which is called Fort Yellowstone, is at Mam-moth Hot Springs. Soldiers patrol the grounddaily, and during the summer season, an encamp-ment is maintained at the Lower Geyser Basin.Any violation of the superintendents rules is se-verely punished. An abundance of flowers beautifies these pleas-ure-grounds, and he who seeks the more secludedhaunts of these lovely children of the fields and 7 V. I !
