280 NOTES ON THE LEADVILLE ORE-DEPOSITS. The formation on Fryer Hill, thus hastily described, varies some-what in its arrangement from other parts of the Leadville district,such as Carbonate and Iron Hills, but they are essentially the same.The two strata of Emmonss blue limestone, the lower separatedfrom the upper (now mostly replaced, as will be explained, by abed of brown hematite, with roof of dolomitic sand), by 40 to 55feet of felsite (Emmonss white porphyry), and again overlaid byfelsite, occur on the two other hills named, as one stratum of greaterthickness, covered with a heavier mass of felsite, and, as a rule, withless drift or wash. I cannot account for this splitting of the bluelimestone on Fryer Hill, except upon Mr. Emmonss view that thefelsite (white porphyry) forced itself into the mass of the blue lime-stone, splitting it.
