rea is to the northwest, evidentlydue to the f^ict that the carry from that direction to the site of smeltingoperations was a downhill one. The hills surrounding Bawdwin to thewest, north and northeast are crowned by an elaborate network of earthfortifications. These fortifications were undoubtedly constructed bythe Chinese for the protection of the mine, but at what period and againstwhom is not known. The rocks at Bawdwin fall into two divisions: first, the volcanic rocks,rhyolite tuffs, breccias and flows; and, second, the overlying and under-lying unfossiliferous sediments, consisting of sandstone, shale, andoccasional conglomerate beds, the last only in the overlying sediments.No Hmestone has been found in these sediments. On the west section of the 653-ft. level, the deepest point in the mine, 174 THE GEOLOGY OF THE BAWDWIN MINES, BURMA, ASIA sediments are present.
