St, Oswalds Priory. 123 Of Archbishop Thurstans church there remains the northarcade of the nave consisting of four arches, the east wall of thenorth aisle, and a portion of the north-west turret of the northtransept (PL IX.) Foundations, with stones of Norman date, havebeen found by Mr. C. Bossom by the boundary wall in Water St.These may probably indicate the extreme length of the churcheastwards. We may conclude that the church consisted of naveand aisles, transepts, probably a central tower, and choir, withaisles. The internal dimensions of the Norman Church would probablybe as follows :— Nave - - - - - 70 feet x 28 feet N. and S. Aisles, each - - 70 x 15 N. and S. Transepts, each - - 30 x 25 Choir - . - - 70 x28 Choir Aisles, each - - - 70 x 15 The character of the work is massive and heavy. The archesof the nave arcade are of two orders, supported on square piers oftwo orders. An unusual and clever specimen of masonry may beobserved on the south side of arches, the lower vouss
