Here in earlier times in the fastnesses of the ancient forest, whichextended for many miles on either side of the Malvern range, the Britonstruggled vainly against Roman and Saxon invader, ere he withdrew acrossthe Wye to make his final stand in the mountains of Wales. Here, if we may accept the tradition handed down by the antiquary,Leland, and pictured for us by the monks of Malvern in the clerestorywindows of their choir, St. Werstan, flying from Deerhurst to escape the Malvern. 55 ruthless Dane, built a hermitage, and died a martyrs death. And here,later on, the persecuted followers of Wicliffe found temporary shelter fromtheir persecutors, and won many a convert in manor house and peasantscot.

On the western slopes of Malvern, bishops of Hereford, from theirhunting seat at Colwall, rode forth with huntsman and hounds to killvenison for their hospitable board. 56 Transactions for the Year 1902. On the east lay Hanley Castle, the favourite abode of the great Earlsof Hereford and Gloucester, who delighted in the chase and jealouslypreserved their forest rights. The dike which runs from end to end of the Malvern range, from theWorcestershire Beacon to the Ragged Stone, was the outcome of aquarrel, six hundred years ago, between Gilbert de Clare and the saintlyCantelupe, because the Red Earls men dared to follow their prey across,the summit of the hills into the heart of the Bishops covers. It was on a May morwenynge on Malverne hilles, c. 1350, thatRobert Langland, or, as Stow and Anthony Wood have called him, Johnof Malverne, a monk if not a prior of the monastery, had his vision of Allmanner of men, and, inspired by the scenes around him, wrote as PiersPloughman of the sorrow
