of height between the hill of Hissarlik and theadjoining ridge, the level top had increased very considerablyin those directions. For this reason we see how the housesof the new settlers extend over the old fortification-wallsand far beyond them. The house-walls are built partly ofquarry-stones joined with clay, partly of clay-bricks: ofsuch clay-brick walls of the fifth settlement, many may beseen in the great north-eastern trench below the Romanpropyhrum (see L on Plan VII.) above the southern gate(see NF on Plan ^ II.), and in the great block of debris(G on Plan VII.) to the south of the temple A. Theyconsist of bricks 0*30 m.-o* 33 m. broad and long, by0,065 mm.-o,0 75 mm. in height, their thickness notexceeding: the length of a brick. Although my archi-tects have not succeeded in finding a fortification-wallwhich could with certainty be attributed to the fifth settle-ment, yet we have brought to light in two places a citadel-wall of large rudely-wrought calcareous blocks, which wecan, at least with the highest probability, indicate as thewall of the fifth city. This wall is now visible, first, inthe great north-west trench (11 z on Plan VII, in this workand Z-O on Plan I. in Ilios); and, again, at the north-eastern end of the great north-e
