velvet coatsand plumed caps. They now took their places onthe quarter-deck, and awaited the coming of thesheik. The canoes were fast approaching theship ; and soon Vasco was able to perceive thatthat which carried the sheik was really a raft, made of two boats lashed together, and a platformof planks laid over them, and provided with anawning of mats. Beneath this sat the sheik, ona low, round stool covered with rich silk. Onthe raft with the sheik were ten other Moors, evidently of high rank. Just as the Moorish boats drew up alongsidethe San Raphael, the trumpets sounded a loudwelcome. Then the sailors aided the swarthydignitary and his companions to ascend on board, where they were met and cordially saluted byVasco and Paulo da Gama, who bowed low to thesheik. Paulo being the elder of the brothers, thesheik mistook him for the chief of the fleet.Taking Paulos hand, he raised it to his breastin token of respect, and said something in a lo\vvoice which the captains could not understand.

His attendants were provided withplaces on a long bench which had been placednear by. Vasco and Paulo sat on either side oftheir guest, and the Moor Davane stood justbehind the chairs to act as interpreter; for, bythis time, Davane had picked up enough Por-tuguese to converse a little with Vasco and hismen. At first, nothing was said; the sheik lookingaround very curiously and deliberately, and tak-ing note of every thing on board, as if he hadnever seen the like of the San Raphael before.Meanwhile the Portuguese were able to observehim and his companions at their leisure. The sheik was a tall, dark, slender man, ofgraceful form and presence, with large black eyesand black flowing beard. He wore a long jacketof plaited red Mecca velvet, and a blue cloak
