The northfront, reprefented in the annexed view, is theraoft perfect : A range of fix columns, withtheir correfpondent pilafters, and entablature,fuftain a noble pediment, highly decorated ; ateach fide, in the fame range, are two pilafters.On account of the acclivity of the ground onwhich the Exchange ftands, the entrance is bya large flight of fteps, and before it, is ahandfome balluftrade fupported by ruftic work :In this front, between the columns, are threeentrances, with elegant iron gates, hung toIonic pilafters. Immediately over the gates,are three windows between the columns, thataflift in lighting the Coffee-room ; on each fideof thefe windows, are two others, all richlyornamented by architraves, &c. The lowerpart, between the pilafters, is embellifhed byruftic work. The weft front varies but little from thenorth front, except the want of a pediment:A regular range of Corinthian pilafters, withtheir entablature, are continued throughout the three

THE ROYAL EXCHANGE. 45 three fronts, and fupports an elegant baluf-trade, which is only interrupted by the pedi-ment in the north front : In the center of theweft fide, is a projection of the entablature,fupported by four columns, between which, arethree handfome glafs doors, with Ionic pilaf-ters like thofe already defcribed ; the afcentto them, is by three fteps only, as the groundat this fide, comes near to a level. In theupper floor, is a range of windows, embellifb-ed like thofe in the north front. Under thepilafters in the eaft front, are arched windowsthat light the Brokers Offices, and a door thatcommunicates with them, and the fub terraneousvaults of the Exchange, The infide of this edifice, pofTefTes beauties-that cannot be clearly expreffed by words, be-ing a great curiofity to thofe who have a taftefor architecture.
