NANTES. 177 The next remarkable object is the chateau of Clair-mont, perched upon a steep which dominates for aconsiderable distance the course of the Loire. Thedescription will be found opposite this page; and wedare not add a word to it. The castle is supposed tohave been built in the fourteenth century, but verylittle is known on the subject. The styles of the pro-prietors in the year 1510, and under Louis XIV., areknown; but there is not a single association either ofhistory or romance recalled by its name. This is themore remarkable, as the edifice stands on one of themost picturesque and commanding sites in the wholecountry; being built on a mass of rock, which lookslike the advanced guard of the magnificent Coteaux deMauves. A portion of the superb panorama presented by thebanks of the river known under this name, is given inthe annexed view.
