Text Appearing Before Image:
us nightly by hideous yells andcries, and in the day-time by repentant and seedy coun-tenances. In the lock-up yard are various pigeon-housesinhabited by every variety of doves. We spend much ofour time watching them. Just beyond the yard of thelock-up is the court house and town hall, and under themthe market. We get nearly all our food from there bypurchases made through the sergeants. On this courthouse is a square tower with clock, etc., and around ita railing and walk where the watchman every quarterof an hour throughout the night calls the time and says,Alls well. He is there more particularly to give noticeof any fires, etc. Back of our yard the rebel Treasury islocated, and from windows we daily see the blue-back noteshung out to dry. On the right of the jail is a small houseand shop kept by a Union man. The navy officers came ^ Lieutenant B. H. Porter, commanding flagship Malvern, killed at FortFisher, together with Flag Lieutenant W. S. Preston. Both were fine bravefellows.

Tuesday, August 16. — Inspector of Prisons was hereto-day. He said that we were much better off than theCharleston prisoners. Asked if our rations were suffi-cient. Had our usual games of cards to-day. Wednesday, August 17. — Usual routine of prison life.At night the air was terribly close, and one finds it a reliefto see daylight. What with bed-bugs and foul air thenights are unpleasant. They found a tunnel our men wereat work on to-day. Thursday, August 18. —While we were playing whistto
