Passing through a villagewe saw a procession carrying the Host, it beinga fete day; the villagers had hung up sheetsagainst the walls for the want of tapestry. I didnot expect to see so much religious devotion so nearParis. The pretty town of Beaugency was alsoen fete \ we arrived too late to see the procession,but the sides of the houses were still covered withtoile and the streets strewn with flowers. In theevening we went on the fine old bridge, withtwenty-five arches over the river, and saw abeautiful sunset effect, but it was too dark tosketch it. June 13.—Arose at 6 a.m. to make a sketchfrom the river; afterwards set off along a roadbeside the Loire, which is here very beautiful, toSt, Laurent, where we breakfasted, and then wewent on to the Chateau de Cliambord, belonging tothe Due de Bordeaux. After early break-fast we walked to Blois (four leagues), where wearrived about mid-day, and put up at the Hotel de laTete Noire. Visited the curious old chateau, whichis now the barracks, also the churches of St.Nicholas and St. Louis, and afterwards made twosketches of the picturesque town from the river.On returning to our hotel we were accosted by agendarme, who demanded our passports in a veryinsolent manner. I informed him that if he wouldcome to the hotel we would produce them. Hethen became very abusive, and said that foreignersought to have their passports always with them.Eventually he followed us to the hotel, where wemet the maitre on the doorstep, who had a livelydiscussion with the gendarme for about half anhour.
