Text Appearing Before Image:
t, dirty white, or pale ash; upper part of the breast, dullgreenish yellow; rest of the lower parts, a pure rich yellow; legs, long, slender, and of a pale flesh color; round the eye, a narrow ringof yellowish white; upper mandible, pale brown; lower, whitish; eye, dark hazel. Since writing the above, I have shot two specimens of a bird, whichin every particular agrees with the above, except in having the throatof a dull buff color, instead of pale ash; both of these were females;and I have little doubt but they are of the same species with the pres-ent, as their peculiar activity seemed exactly similar to the malesabove described. These birds do not breed in the lower parts of Pennsylvania, thoughthey probably may be found in summer in the Alpine swamps andnorthern regions, in company with a numerous class of the same tribethat breed in these unfrequented solitudes. * According to Bonaparte, this is a new species discovered by Wilson. Com-paratively little is known regarding it. —Ed.
Text Appearing After Image:
NIGHT HAWK. 371 NIGHT HAWK.—CAPRIMULGUS AMEKICANUS. —Fig. 170,Male; Fig. 171, Fkmale. Long-winged Goatsucker, Arct. Zoo/. No. 331. — Peales Museum, No. 7723,male; 7724, female. CAPRIMULGUS AMERTCjIJVUS? — Wilson.* Caprimulgus Virglnianus, Bonap. Sifnop. p. 62. — Chordeiles Virgimorus, Sw-North. Zool. ii. p. 337. This bird, in Virginia and some of the southern districts, is calleda Bat; the name Niglit Hawk is usually given it in the Middle andNorthern States, probably on account of its appearance when on wing * North America appears to contain three species of this curious genus, — thepresent one, with the following, and C Carolinensis, afterwards described. Thewhole are nearly of like size, and, from the general similarity of marking whichruns through the group, will somewhat resemble each other. Wilson may, there-fore, claim the first merit of clearly distinguishing them, although he remained inuncertainty regarding the descriptions and synon3-ms of other authors. Vieill
