Text Appearing Before Image:
ndopened fire from a spot where I could not seethem, one coming within a hundred yards.Almost at the same moment that they at-tacked, four enemy scouts came diving outof the clouds, two of them firing as theydived at me. I turned on the nearer of thetwo-seaters and, firing forty rounds at himfrom the side, managed to shoot him down.I then went straight at the four scouts, opening fire on one that was coming straighthead-on. He swerved slightly at the last, and flashed by me. I ducked away into acloud to consider the situation for a moment, but in the mist, in my excitement, I lostcontrol of my machine and fell in a spinningnose-dive for quite a distance. When Iflattened out at last, the enemy scouts hadflown away, but there beneath me, still slowlyspinning to his fate, was my second two-seater. Three of the missing scouts nowappeared some distance above me. I de-cided it was not a very healthy spot, andmade away for home, perfectly contentwith having added two more Hun scalps tomy score.
Text Appearing After Image:
WINGED WARFARE 161 It was great flying-weather, and next dayI had four fights in forty-five minutes. Icould have had more, but had to return forwant of fuel and ammunition. First of all,I spotted two of my favourite two-seatersdoing their daily observations, some threemiles on the German side of the lines. Iwas very careful now about the way I ap-proached these people, and went at it in amore or less scientific manner. Climbing tojust under the top of a cloud, where I wasmore or less invisible, I watched them care-fully for five whole minutes as they wentback and forth on their beat, and I carefullyfigured out just where I could catch themwhen they v/ere nearest our lines. I alsokept a very close eye on some enemy fight-ing patrols lurking in the distance. Pickinga moment when they were well away, I flewover some more sheltering clouds, then camedown and dashed at the two Huns. Imanaged to get twenty rounds into thenearer one, and pretty good shots they were, too, but nothing seemed to
