d to that.Near our post there were two small farm-houses about halfa mile apart. In one, a double cabin of hewn logs, therelived three ladies—a widowed mother, a married and an un-married daughter. The husband of the daughter was awayin our army, and these women unaided had cultivated asmall field of several acres in corn. As it was all they hadto live on, we took what we needed from another farm ownedby an able-bodied man who had managed to stay at home.Within two weeks the battle of Chickamauga had beenfought, in part over this very ground, and the next day Irode by this spot. Where the field of corn which we wouldnot touch had stood there was not a stalk left, not even afence-rail. The trodden ground was checkered with thecharred embers of camp-fires where the tents of the Federalinfantry had stood in rows, and nothing but the chimneysremained to tell where stood the log house which had shel-tered those three lone women.
