Many papers in Great Bri-tain and Can-a-da made strong protest againstperm.itting the islands to be annexed to the U-ni-ted States, but the Brit-ishgovernment seemed to take little interest in .the matter, and none to theextent of endeavoring to prevent a union. At the time when this history closes the commissioners were still inWash-ing-ton endeavoring to attain their desired union, with great prospectthat they would be successful and that before many weeks there would beanother territory added to our sisterhood of states, these island gems of thePa-cif-ic. The distance from San Fran-cis-co to Ilon-o-lu-lu, the capital and chiefcity of the Ha-wai-i-an islands, is twenty-one hundred miles.
