he reign of Henrythe Eighth. In America are certain \ery largespecies of this genus, covered with very strong,bony, square scales, as if in a kind of armour. But the genus Silurus is a more remarkableinstance of this bony kind of armature investingsome particular Fishes. In the genus Silurus wehave examples of Fishes entirely coated as if in aregular suit of armour. Many naturalists, how-ever, choose to separate these armed species fromthe rest under different titles. The curious genus Exocoetiis contains the trueor proper flying-fishes, or such as are particularlyknown by that name: this genus is by no meansnumerous; containing only four or five species.All are distinguished by a lengthened herring-shaped body, and pectoral fins of a vast lengthand size, and of a sharpened form. The commonFlying-Fish is about the size of a Herring and ofa silvery colour, with pale brown fins.
