Protection level[edit]

Can we perhaps try to find consensus? -- Rillke(q?) 15:07, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think we just did; there is no need for the file description page to be protected at all, and the file is already fully protected against uploads and moves, which is the usual attitude towards official Wikimedia logos. odder (talk) 20:20, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Overwrite[edit]

Please replace with File:Wikivoyage-Logo-v3-icon.svg per the discussion on Meta. —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:57, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide a link to the discussion on Meta. Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 17:02, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
File:Wikivoyage-Logo-v3-icon.svg won the contest at Meta to replace the globe-and-arrows design. Considering the sheer number of templates etc. that would need to be modified to use the new design, overwriting this file would be the most comprehensive way to avoid any lingering trademark issues. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 23:02, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know that it won the contest (carried out the IRV for R2), but I also know that, according to PiRSquared17, Jalexander said in IRC that there is legatimite use of the old logo and that we should not yet replace it completely. So please provide a diff-link for "the discussion on Meta". Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 07:13, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I recognized your name from the Meta proceedings. :^) From a quick glance, I haven't found any Meta discussion about replacing this specific file, but maybe Justin has. Still, I wonder if it's now up to each Wikimedia wiki (not just the Wikivoyages) to carry about the replacement manually, or if it can be done for them in a more comprehensive way. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 10:44, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Asked Jalexander. -- Rillke(q?) 11:19, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Rillke, I did say that yeah. As a staff member I'm fine if the community decides they want to overwrite and when to do it (but I definitely didn't want to do it at that point as a staff member doing the logo switchover because it was definitely still used in a couple places which may not have all been good to overwrite). It was also much safer to replace rather then overwrite and risk odd cache clearing issues. On a personal level I think we should make a bit of a survey to see how many places it's used where they want to specifically reference the 'globe logo' rather then the 'wikivoyage logo' (discussions about the old logo or replacing that specific logo is the biggest use case in my mind). If we don't see much in the way of fallout then I'd say 'good enough'. Jalexander (talk) 22:05, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I  Support overwriting this file because the warning on File:Travel Guide Logo - Proposal Yiyi.svg and the file name indicate that this file will be always the wikivoyage logo. -- Rillke(q?) 11:19, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose replacement of this file, it should be kept for historical purposes (e.g. pages that are a snapshot of old main pages etc), unless it can be agreed that it is a copy-vio, in which case it should be deleted.  An optimist on the run! 16:38, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • This is what we have File:Travel Guide Logo - Proposal Yiyi.svg for. -- Rillke(q?) 19:23, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • BTW, you can't really create "snapshots" of old pages inside a wiki. Ok, via API expandtemplates, possible, maybe but this not what MediaWiki is designed for. Templates change all the time… http://archive.org/ is possibly what you are looking for ;-) -- Rillke(q?) 19:30, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • Yes, I used expand templates, to avoid the problem of changing templates. I can't say whether or not it's what it was "designed for", but it works. I don't think archive.org is likely to throw up a snapshot at the right time, as en-wiki main page changes several times a day. And finally it is not Commons' role to dictate how I use my user pages in another project.  An optimist on the run! 05:47, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
        • Commons is not "dictating" but your archive approach is inappropriate: If a file is named "Wikivoyage-logo" you have to expect that is shows the latest version of the logo. It's a wiki and a wiki is not an archive but subject to changes. BTW, do you also dump the Main page CSS applied through common.css and possibly other local CSS files? -- Rillke(q?) 08:55, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
