CommonsDelinker[edit]

-- Rillke(q?) 00:16, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Kannst Du damit was anfangen?

Instructing CommonsDelinker to replace this file

--Brackenheim (talk) 11:02, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

No token for pl.wikipedia.org". Kennst Du die? --Brackenheim (talk) 10:29, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

var CORSsupported = false;
var wiki = 'fr.wikipedia.org';
var done = function() {
  console.log('done: ' + CORSsupported);
};
	var testCORS = function (done) {
		if (CORSsupported) return done();
		doCORSReq({
			action: 'query',
			meta: 'userinfo'
		}, wiki, function (data, textStatus, jqXHR) {
			if (!data.query.userinfo.id) {
				CORSsupported = 'CORS supported but not logged-in';
			} else {
				CORSsupported = 'OK';
			}
			done();
		}, function (jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) {
			CORSsupported = 'CORS not supported: ' + textStatus + ' \nError: ' + errorThrown;
			done();
		});
	};

	var doCORSReq = function (params, wiki, cb, errCb, method) {
		$.support.cors = true;
		// Format parameter first!
		var newParams = {
			format: 'json',
			origin: document.location.protocol + '//' + document.location.hostname
		};
		params = $.extend(newParams, params);
		$.ajax({
			'url': '//' + wiki + '/w/api.php',
			'data': params,
			'xhrFields': {
				'withCredentials': true
			},
			'type': method || 'GET',
			'success': function (r) {
				cb(r, wiki);
			},
			'error': errCb,
			'dataType': 'json'
		});
	};
testCORS(done);

Versuche mal meta:User:Krinkle/Tools/Global SUL --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:13, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Tunning SVG convert[edit]

Hallo Rillke,

B. in File:California_State_Route_193_Map.svg zeigt.

Guten Neues -- Menner (talk) 14:15, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Habe das Limit auf 5 MiB hochgesetzt. -- Rillke(q?) 17:03, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
--Menner (talk) 17:49, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

File renaming reasons[edit]

Screenshot of RenameLink

Hi! You placed Template:Warning on the page Template:File renaming reasons/i18n/uk. What does it mean "ensure it be compatible with the gadget"? How it can be done? And in spite of that I translated "File renaming reasons" to ukrainian, the renaming request form is not shown in ukrainian anyway. How to make it show ukrainian? --Tohaomg (talk) 16:59, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Hey Tohaomg, as a translator, you don't have really care for the warning, except that you shouldn't put any markup into your translation that may confuse the gadget or make its use impossible (e.g. tables with fixed width or colours that make it impossible to read the text) but if you just translate, using standard and the provided markup from the source language (en), there is no point to worry about this warning.
For the form not being shown in Ukrainian: First of all, it is important that you set your user interface language to Ukrainian. But I guess you've already done so. Then, it might be still in English because your browser has cached a copy of the page. I suggest to go to a file description page, launch the gadget (request form) and then

Please purge your browser’s cache . (You only need to do it once.)

Internet Explorer: press Ctrl+F5, Firefox: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl+ Shift+R), Opera/Konqueror: press F5, Safari: hold down Shift+alt while clicking Reload, Chrome: hold down Shift while clicking Reload

Then launch the gadget (request form) again. -- Rillke(q?) 11:10, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
I deleted the cache, but it didn't work. I looked from another computer, but it didn't work neither. You can look by yourself: set your language to ukrainian and if renaming request form will start with "Думка, чи називається файл правильно..." that is ok, if something other then its not ok. --Tohaomg (talk) 11:31, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
I asked my friend to look - no ukrainian form again, so it is not an account issue. --Tohaomg (talk) 11:35, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
That's strange, see screenshot I just uploaded. Perhaps you were expecting to translate something different? -- Rillke(q?) 11:57, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
That is russian language on screenshot, not ukrainian --Tohaomg (talk) 12:17, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
Oh, I am really sorry. Missed that. An action=purge on Template:File renaming reasons/render did the trick. -- Rillke(q?) 12:30, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
It works! If that was you who made it work, then thank you a lot! --Tohaomg (talk) 12:37, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
You're welcome. Thanks for asking and for your translation efforts! -- Rillke(q?) 12:52, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

POTY/2015[edit]

Hello, Rilke. I have completed now because I was busy in my daily life. Do you can check the files' whether in the right categories? User:Uğurkent/deneme. Uğurkent (talk) 12:34, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

SVG edit tool[edit]

Hello! Recently, I have learned about your SVG edit script... which by the way is a life saver! I was wondering if you would be willing to create the same script on the English Wikipedia? I spend most of my time there and I do a lot of editing with university articles/sports, many of which have a SVG file. I don't have the program or the skills to create an SVG, but your tool has helped tremendously with the files on Commons. It would help tremendously if it were on the English Wikipedia, as well! Thanks, Corkythehornetfan 00:25, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

@Rillke: I was just checking to see if you received this message and your thoughts? Corkythehornetfan 21:05, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. It is possible using the script on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. I'll provide the details within this week. -- Rillke(q?) 23:56, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

GlobalReplace 0.6.4 funktioniert nicht[edit]

Hallo Rillke,

{{LargeImage}} on all User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js uploads[edit]

Hi Rillke! Would it be easy to add a megapixel check to bigChunkedUpload.js to avoid adding {{LargeImage}} to small files? Apparently, your javascript is used by some to perform all their uploads regardless of size, and the bot referred to on Template:LargeImage/doc seems to not run regularly. Storkk (talk) 11:39, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

This may not be your script Special:Diff/188409408/188410934... is this Zhuyifei1999's bug? Storkk (talk) 11:50, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, though I don't think it would worth the work to check the size if the image and see if it is too large, due to technical restrictions (image size are not saved anywhere, and to know the size one would need to re-check the actual file, which may overload NFS & lots of code required). I've always assumed gallica images are quite large, and users are expected to check all the prefilled text. As for bigChunkedUpload.js, I don't think it can do anything about it, as the first revision does not seems to be uploaded by bigChunkedUpload.js. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 13:25, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
When I reported the above, I was unaware that any tool other than bigChunkedUpload was being used. Turns out I was incorrect, I can see how this would be difficult/impossible for the tools to solve, and perhaps the best would be to see if Dschwen would add the task of removing the template from small files back to his bot's duties. Storkk (talk) 14:40, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

API error: badparams: Cannot supply a filekey when offset is 0[edit]

Do you have any idea what this error is? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:10, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Probably that you shouldn't set the filekey parameter when you upload the first chunk because you shouldn't know the file key because it's the first interaction about this file with the server? In case the server told you to send at offset 0 again, it's probably better to restart the whole upload instead of trying to match that and continue a mangled upload. -- Rillke(q?) 09:37, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Found the reason: phab:T129471. The upload warning handling in pywikibot is apparently too complicated to be bug-less :P --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 13:44, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

SVG[edit]

Which is the best program for editing SVG? I use Inkscape. Regards. --Vivaelcelta {talk  · contributions} 03:24, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

I think it is. Just get used with it and its flaws (or the flaws Commons produces when rendering Inkscape SVGs). If you are brave, you may also look at the SVG/XML source code and tweak your SVGs that way. There are of course proprietary products that have some comfortable features but you have to be a graphics designer to really profit from using them. Kind regards -- Rillke(q?) 03:32, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
@Vivaelcelta: Did you know Commons SVG Checker can help you spotting issues prior to uploading? In the analyzer log, you should see everything that is known to cause trouble. -- Rillke(q?) 13:48, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Note that async uploading is currently broken[edit]

Hey, I'm just noting that uploading files with API action=upload&async=1 is currently broken, and it looks like User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js uses that. Not sure if you want to put a note somewhere or something. (This is the same problem as Commons:Village_pump#Commons_upload_failing.) See phab:T130238#2137290 for details. Matma Rex (talk) 07:46, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

@Matma Rex: Thanks, disabled the checkbox by default. Although it looks like some people were still able to upload. Maybe they switched the option manually. -- Rillke(q?) 13:21, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

Re: Polish translations of the new POTY 2015 category names.[edit]

Thanks for helping but I just have noticed an issue. The category names mentioned on the page begin with small letters so I provided translations which also begin with small letters. But actually they should begin with capital letters, just like original English names, eg. MediaWiki:Com-poty-cat-sculptures and reliefs. So I would be grateful if you could change this. jdx Re: 14:14, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Sculptures and reliefs → Sculture e rilievi
  • Interiors of religious buildings → Interni di edifici religiosi
  • Objects, shells and miscellaneous → Oggetti, conchiglie e vari

I hope you can help me find the right place where I can translate these categories. Thanks in advance.--fringio · α†Ω 15:18, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Different font sizes of adjacent messages in Template:POTY2015/header[edit]

Yesterday you added a new message in Template:POTY2015/header. Unfortunately, it is displayed with a bigger font size than its adjacent message – go to Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/R1/Gallery and you will see that the text "Round 1 is open!" has smaller height than "Select a category you'd like to vote in". Or, perhaps, "Round 1 is open!" uses too small font size. jdx Re: 09:56, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

It was intentionally; the text replaces the button on the Gallery page. Feel free to fix what you believe that needs to be fixed on Template:POTY2015/header; it's not protected. Just make sure to use the edit summary to describe why the change was required. Thanks. -- Rillke(q?) 11:23, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Das geht am einfachsten, wenn man in den erweiterten Einstellungen (Seitenleiste) angibt, dass er sehr viele Daten beim Herunterscrollen laden soll (Amount of files to be loaded when clicking on more or when scrolling down). -- Rillke(q?) 09:28, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Missing translatable messages[edit]

I think that MediaWiki:Com-poty-no-voting-on-these-pages, MediaWiki:Com-poty-no-voting-on-this-index-page and MediaWiki:Com-poty-thumbsize should be added to the list of translatable messages. It's quite hard to find them when they are not on the list. jdx Re: 01:25, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

They should appear sooner or later. -- Rillke(q?) 07:57, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Incomprehensible message in Template:POTY2015/Roundheader[edit]

I wrote a message to Odisha1 but now I see that it should be addressed to you because you are the author of this change.

BTW. It seems that the following messages should be added to the list:

jdx Re: 06:31, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

If “The file this vote page is for is gone. Maybe it was moved or deleted.” is incomprehensible, could you rephrase it? It is displayed on vote pages whose files have been deleted or otherwise removed.
Messages were added to Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/Translations/Misc with Special:Diff/192952469. N.b. if you know how to fix something, please don't hesitate to do it. -- Rillke(q?) 07:18, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Wow, I have read “The file this vote page is for is gone.” several times and could not understand it. The “rephrase” has given me a hint. :-) What do you think about “The file related to this vote page is gone.”? IMO “associated with” instead of “related to” also is fine (or even better). But I am not fluent in English. jdx Re: 08:05, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

VisualFileChange.js by Special:WhatLinksHere?[edit]

Hi,

With VisualFileChange.js you can work an a selection by user or category, would it be possible to make a selection through Special:WhatLinksHere? I wanted to do a custom replace on these files : Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Forbidden_filename.png for this kind of replacement Special:Diff/193913138. Is it possible?

Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 07:52, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

Some people already hacked it and made their custom copy. In theory you can but there are some obstacles like having to code JS. Ideally VFC would support arbitrary data sources. -- Rillke(q?) 12:07, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

bigChunkedUpload.js upload twice[edit]

Perhaps it's not a problem coming from your script, but is double upload in a row a known problem ? File:Dieulafoy_-_La_Perse,_la_Chaldée_et_la_Susiane.djvu#filehistory Phe (talk) 19:28, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Looks like a server glitch. Is your internet connection that fast that it would allow you to upload 132.91 MB in 30s? -- Rillke(q?) 20:01, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
Nope, it took more than 20 minutes to upload, now I remember I already see that for other files around 100MB without your script, the first upload used 10-30 minutes, the second less than a minute, server side problem surely. Phe (talk) 20:06, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Ease file describing[edit]

Hi,

I realy appreciate your VisualFileChange.js and I was wondering if you can create something to ease file description process, which is a time consuming activity. I personally think it can be semiautomated, because you add there one information 5 times. Let me explain it on the example. You make a picture of barn in a village. Than:

  1. file name: Village, barn.jpg (this is sometimes done in users mother language so in mine it would be Vesnice, stodola.jpg)
  2. file description in English: Barn in Village, XY District, Czech Republic.
  3. description in Czech: Stodola ve Vesnici, Okres XY, Česká Republika. (problem might be, that some languages are highly flexive)
  4. Category 1: Village
  5. Category 2: Barns in XY District
  6. Geo: ... (geocoord is yet another, but same description and in some cases you can even get the type of object e.g. for churches from OSM)

So I was wondering, whether we can have any semiautomatic tool, which will help us to create file descriptions faster. I understand it is not for all types of files, but to many contributers, kind of solution would help.--Juandev (talk) 08:07, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Usage of FileContentsByBot[edit]

Hey there,

I am doing a GSoC 2016 project to bring back the catimages script made by DrTrigon a few years ago. You can check out the Phabricator task at [T129611]. I was looking at the current status of the JS Templates and was wondering whether Template:FileContentsByBot was still being actively developed/maintained/used in commons. I found that the gadget Help:Gadget-ImageAnnotator has been added to commons which is loaded by default, which would be similar to Template:FileContentsByBot/Faces. AbdealiJK (talk) 14:31, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

Both Gadgets/ Template systems are currently unmaintained. I know that ImageAnnotator is doing similar things but I preferred not to mess with its code base when I started {{FileContentsByBot}} and the accompanying JS, MediaWiki:FileContentsByBot.js. While image annotator is an actively used feature in production, {{FileContentsByBot}} is kind of research. -- Rillke(q?) 20:22, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Rename[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

POTY barnstar.svg

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Rillke/Discuss,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

VisualFileChange.js large amounts[edit]

Suggestion for a new idea for VisualFileChange.js: A way to load all images in a category, not matter the size, by hitting one button. I'd really like this, as I am working on images in categories that have a large amount of files (>10,000 files). It can load them in small amounts, but to have a way so that the file changer loads all of the images, instead of having to scroll down and hit "more" every time. Elisfkc (talk) 03:42, 12 June 2016 (UTC)

VFC has a limit to prevent abuse (only admins and bots having a higher query limit). --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:07, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi, because of an irritating AbuseFilter bug, we (Kaldari, MusikAnimal and I) are going to do an update next week that will affect some of your filters. We hope we'll fix all affected filters ourselves, but we're of course grateful if you want to help us. The issue is explained here; the current plan is here. In any case, we wanted you to be aware what's happening, and you're very welcome to help out of course. I'm sending you an email with more details. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 17:10, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Picture requests workflow[edit]

Hi Rillke! I see you haven't been very active lately. I hope you're okay and just enjoying well deserved summer break. I have an idea that I wanted to float with you. I have Commons:Picture requests/Requests on my watchlist, and I've been getting increasingly frustrated with how broken it is. To name a few problems:

  • Not all requests fit neatly under a single heading (if I'm interested in an endemic species; does that go in the biology section or the relevant country section)
  • Because of the above, finding requests that one might fulfill is harder than it should be
  • There's no established procedure for dealing with obviously invalid requests ("please upload this blatantly non-free file")
  • The instructions at Commons:Picture requests are not followed, and there's lots of page history to trawl through to figure out who to respond to
  • There's no record of fulfilled requests

But there's no need to reinvent the wheel. We already have a working set of gadgets, mechanisms and procedures for dealing with requests and request backlogs. What do you think about reusing some of the infrastructure used for deletion requests to deal with picture media requests? I'm thinking something like MediaWiki:Gadget-QuickDelete.js for filing new requests, with requests on individual pages, which can be added to a chronological backlog, placed into multiple appropriate categories, and then closed and archived when they're fulfilled or dismissed.

What do you think? LX (talk, contribs) 17:04, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Bot edits to MediaWiki namespace[edit]

I'm writing you because you operate a bot that has made edits to the MediaWiki namespace in the last 30 days. I've started a proposal to make the bot flag not apply to the MediaWiki namespace. If this proposal goes through, edits by users with the bot flag to the MediaWiki namespace would show up in the RecentChanges feed like normal non-bot flagged edits do. The reason I'm proposing this is that the MediaWiki namespace contains many sensitive things in it, and if someone compromised an adminbot account they could do much damage by discretely editing the MediaWiki namespace. Additionally, there are on the whole very few bot edits to MediaWiki namespace pages, so its my hope that such a measure would not cause undue hardship on anyone. For more information or if you have any feedback, please see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T151408 . Thanks. BWolff (WMF) (talk) 21:31, 25 November 2016 (UTC)
