English: Maquis ( French) or macchia (Italian: macchia Mediterranea) is a Mediterranean region xeric shrubland ecoregion of the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome. It typically consists of densely growing evergreen shrubs such as holm oak, tree heath, strawberry tree, sage, juniper and myrtle. It is found throughout the Mediterranean Basin, including most of coastal Italy, southern France, Sardinia, Corsica, and elsewhere.
