Wikipedia translation of the week: 2021-44
The winner this Translation of the week is
Please be bold and help translate this article! Islamic ornament is the use of decorative patterns in Islamic art. They can be broadly divided into the arabesque, using curving plant-based elements, geometric patterns with straight lines or regular curves, and calligraphy, consisting of religious texts with stylised appearance, used both decoratively and to convey meaning. All three often involve elaborate interlacing. The three types of ornament are often used together. Islamic decoration has had a significant influence on European decorative artforms, especially as Western arabesque. "Good recommendation. I have translations and searchable text versions of some texts on this site:

I still haven't completed the translation of the Dai Viet su ky toan thu part, but hopefully, I can do that early next year. I don't think Wikisource existed when I did this. Help me to investigate
Hello, can you help me to investigate about a Vietnamese literature work? Several days ago, I've discovered a work about the Vietnam War, which knows as 南方来信 Letter From the South for us. I saw there is an article described that:
According above article, this should be named Letter from the Fatherland in Vietnam (in this article, 祖国来信), including a series of letters talk about the war, this was translated in Chinese in January 1964. In China, this was published between May and July of the same year, and later derived as straight play, manga, and even Peking Opera (I added them in Outline of the Vietnam War). So in China this became the most notable Vietnamese work at the times. If you're able to known about more information about this Letter from the Fatherland, I hope you let me know. Thanks. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 15:43, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Great Brightstar: , excuse the late reply as I have a lot of things off-wiki to attend to lately. Anyhow, thank you for bringing this to my attention as I have never heard of the Tổ Quốc Lai Tín (祖國來信) before and it sounds very interesting to me so when I have the time I will investigate it. But as it will be quite some time until I am available again for such things I would advise you to e-mail Lê Minh Khải at "liam.kelley@ubd.edu.bn" as he has a lot of access to PRC-North Vietnamese relations-related works and has wrote about the propaganda from both related to each other. Please update me if he gives you something. --Donald Trung (talk) 19:09, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
01/11
@Donald Trung: I just found 2 maps that for some reason showed northern Thailand as part of Vietnamese dynasty: File:Southeast Asia, Birman Empire & Countries South and East of the Ganges, 1831.jpg and File:China and the Birman empire with parts of Cochin China and Siam.jpg. I have never seen any maps like these before. The two maps were published in the early 1830s in the UK. Did the authors make some mistakes? Or there is something I didn't know? Ltn12345 (talk) 00:43, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Ltn12345: , regarding "File:China and the Birman empire with parts of Cochin China and Siam.jpg" it actually shows it as a part of "Laos" or "Lan"(?), I think that these were likely hundreds of independent Shan states that were nominally under a Lao protectorate status, which was itself a Nguyễn Dynasty tributary state, the map also shows a border between "Cochin China proper" and the country to its west so I don't think that the British mapmakers considered the area to be Cochin Chinese, well, as "Cochin Chinese" as India was "British", though this is probably more comparable to a sphere of influence than anything else, note that countries always claim areas that they don't actually control. "File:Southeast Asia, Birman Empire & Countries South and East of the Ganges, 1831.jpg" is even more ambitious, it shows Yunnan and Laos both again, but the only territory the Nguyễn controlled in what we today call "Laos" then was Trấn Ninh (鎮寧). I think that these maps were working off of incomplete information and just assumed that the Annamese / Cochin Chinese controlled all of "Laos" based on limited European contact and the Annamese / Cochin Chinese nominal claims of ruling Thiên hạ (Hán-Nôm: 天下). I think that the British just took these claims at face value, but it wasn't uncommon for Europeans to exaggerate the size of the Nguyễn Empire, this was used as a justification by the French to conquer Laos from Siam, as they claimed that legally speaking Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Champassak were all Nguyễn Dynasty protectorates, so would be eligible to become French protectorates, in reality these claims were grossly overestimations of the Nguyễn's territory. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 08:11, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Nyhetsbrev nr. 23 fra Wikimedia Norge
Hello, here are the latest news from Wikimedia Norge!
- Wikipedia in Norwegian Bokmål is turning 20!
- The Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia turns 20 on November 26, and this will be celebrated during the December 1 wiki meet-up. That will be a virtual meet-up with a quiz and other fun. Do you wish to receive a 20th anniversary T-shirt? Send us your address and size (S–XL) to wikimedia@wikimedia.no!
- Here's more information about the meet-up.
- Giellavahkku and Sámi work
- Maybe you've been wondering why there's been so much Sámi stuff in social media lately? The reason is the Sámi language week, Giellavahkku, which aims to make the Sámi languages more visible. The Sámi languages, culture and history are an important part of the diversity of knowledge. We have summarized the work we're doing with regards to Sámi languages in this blog post.
- The Lapp Codicil was repatriated to the Sámi Archives this month, after a long process. The Lapp Codicil is still the base of the laws for borders in the North of Scandinavia. It will soon also be available on Wikimedia Commons.
- Queer culture year 2022
- Througout 2022, the queer culture year (Skeivt kulturår) will be marked in Norway. In preparation for this, we have uploaded 139 interviews by the Queer Archive to Wikimedia Commons. We also have several other projects planned for next year.
- – The fact that queer experiences, history and culture aren't reflected online is a blank spot in our common history, says Heide Rohde Rafto, acting academic director of the Queer Archive of Norway. She adds that queer history is not only the history of LGBT+ people, but of the whole of society.
- By engaging in the queer cultural year, we are hoping to fill in these blank spots. And we're doing this from a diversity point of view – it's not all about gender and sexuality, but also about individuality and the people who have made an effort to effect change.
- Language Diversity Hub
- Diversity of knowledge shouldn't just be limited to Norway. Through international cooperations, we are hoping to create a gathering point for those who are working on indigenous and underrepresented languages. In this project we are joined by several participants of the Arctic Knot Conference this summer. You can read more about this work on this page.
- Retriever
- It will soon be time to disperse access tokens for Retriever again. You can sign up from November 15. Reminders will be posted on Torget and Samfunnshuset when the sign-up opens.
- Wikimedia Sverige have a separate deal with the Swedish Retriever. They have many access tokens available, and can share them with Norwegian volunteers as well. Only Swedish media is available through their deal. Sign up on this list on the Swedish Wikipedia if you're interested in getting access to the Swedish Retriever.
- Wikigrants
- Now that society has reopened, there are more opportunities to go out and about! There are several activities you can apply for a wikigrant for. All Wikimedia contributors can apply for a grant of up to 8,000 NOK. The grant must be used for activities that support one or more Wikimedia projects, and the application deadline is November 20.
Have you already paid your membership fees for 2021? If not, you can always do so by re-registering on this page.

Vaticaanse munt
--Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:09, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
