Gegoten Chinese spelmunten en paardmunten
Moi @Quistnix: ,
Wat interessant is de beschrijving "Various classes of objects were omitted from “Cast Chinese Amulets” (by this author), as their primary use was for gaming, rather than the bringing of good fortune. This book is intended to make good this omission. The pieces covered are:".
Interessant genoeg ook Chinese schaakstukken: "Chess Pieces, the well-known game of Chinese Chess, still played to this day. Select An Immortal.". "A game played during the Song dynasty using counters with illustrations of one of the Immortals, and a short poem describing their activities. Wine Drinking Game Coins. These are counters dating back to the time of the Han dynasty, and were used for a variety of drinking games."
--Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 08:25, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

Nguyễn Dynasty nobility and the Nam-Triều Quốc-Ngữ Công-Báo
This is an e-mail draft to ask a professor questions and help with some information about files on the Wikimedia Commons and content at Wikipedia.
"Dear Kẻ đốt đền,
One foot in Imperial China, one foot in modern Europe.
I recently came across something quite interesting on an envelope:
This is the coat of arms of the Baron of An-Phước, as you can tell by the symbolism that it's "One foot in Imperial China, one foot in modern Europe". The crown is that of a typical French baron while the seal shows the Chinese seal script characters "安福". This envelope was sent in 1943 during the Japanese occupation.
This means that as late as the 1940's the nobility that existed in Nguyễn Annam and Nguyễn Tonkin were prestigious enough that they would openly advertise themselves using their titles. That their titles carried enough prestige to boast about. At least in this case.
Now, I can find quite some information about what the ranks of the nobility were, their succession, Etc. I just find it weird that I basically rarely see historians talk about the Nguyễn Dynasty nobility. This even includes the pre-French period, prominent mandarins and military leaders are often discussed, but rarely the nobility.
These people were still in some ways the elites of the society, while probably not politically very influential they might have been socially powerful. An odd thing is that I sometimes find references to noblemen in primary sources but they are rarely mentioned at all by any post-Nguyễn historians at all.
Were they really this irrelevant? If people keep characterising this period as "feudal" then why doesn't anyone write about the actual "feudal lords" of this era?
A similar case.
A similarly forgotten group in modern Vietnamese history are the money-changers, they are very commonly mentioned in contemporary French accounts up until World War II. They had a very prominent role within societies of Nguyễn Annam and Nguyễn Tonkin under French rule and the Resident-Superior of Tonkin even issued monthly fixed exchange rates to deal with them. Basically all trade between the French and the indigenous population went through these middlemen. And also all trade between the countryside and the cities as the larger cities were using French issued silver while the countryside was still using ancient cash coins for their daily transactions.
Yet in the modern era I see very little being written about them, contrast this with the libraries of books written about the similar money-changer cultures in Chinese history and Japanese history.
Nam-Triều Quốc-Ngữ Công-Báo (南朝國語公報).
I was busy with importing public domain media from the French domination period when I came across something called the "Nam-Triều Quốc-Ngữ Công-Báo" (南朝國語公報), or the Bulletin of the Southern Dynasty in the National Language. 😱 So I went to Gallica to check to see if they had it as I'm familiar with the Bulletin Administratif de l'Annam and the Bulletin Administratif du Tonkin being there. Now here's the interesting part, the "Nam-Triều Quốc-Ngữ Công-Báo" is not the same publication as the Bulletin Administratif de l'Annam, in fact the only reference to even the existence of the "Nam-Triều Quốc-Ngữ Công-Báo" I can find on Gallica is the extract "Sauf disposition contraire, le présent code, après promulgation, sera publié dans le Bulletin administratif de l’Annam, et dans le Bulletin Officiel du Gouvernement Annamite (Nam-Triêu Quôc-Ngu Công-Bao), et sera exécutoire un mois après la date rie la dernière publication" mentioned in the Bulletin Administratif de l'Annam:
This indicates to me that the French administration in the Protectorate of Annam had a separate government bulletin from the government of the Southern Dynasty (this is despite both being called "the government of Annam" in French).
The weird part is that the only image of this official bulletin I can find online is this image:
Which was published online specifically because it shows an imperial decree issued by the Bảo Đại Emperor that concerns disputed territory to which modern historians look for any evidence to back the government's claims about. I don't find much information about this bulletin online other than one website claiming that it was published from 1884, but I'm highly skeptical of that claim as the only references I've seen to the Southern Dynasty's government bulletin come from the 1930's.
I don't think that there's any publication that would give me more insight into the inner workings of the government of the Southern Dynasty than this bulletin... And it's not even online. 😭😭😭
From what I can tell imperial decrees and edicts were all published here, laws and changes to laws seem to have been published here, and any administrative actions and changes would have been mentioned here as the above quote concerns the Civil Code of Annam.
Another odd thing I noticed is that the Traditional Chinese characters "南朝國語公報" are written from left-to-right here, this seemed to be a trend in which Southern people were adopting French styles to write traditional Vietnamese things.
Contrast this with this image I snatched from your blog:
Where you can clearly see that the Traditional Chinese characters are written like "報公語國 - 護保圻北" (北圻保護 - 國語公報) from right-to-left.
Yours faithfully,
