Discussion on dewiki

It seems like noone bothered to inform you yet, so… There’s a discussion on dewiki, where some users consider your bot’s edits regarding the BS-Icons rather harmful, including calls to force-stop the bot and to duplicate the BS-Icons locally. --Nenntmichruhigip (talk) 11:57, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up, Nenntmichruhigip. I don't understand German (and Google Translate is of limited help), so please let me know if any action is required on my part. If necessary, I (or any dewiki admin) can disable the bot on dewiki (see bot's user page). — JJMC89 18:43, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Actually, I too don’t exactly understand their problem. And honestly, I personally don’t really care, so I might stop reading that discussion. But I’ll check whether you’ve been informed if I notice something important. --Nenntmichruhigip (talk) 19:20, 23 September 2017 (UTC)
@Nenntmichruhigip: I don't want to spend time arguing in dictionary-translated German which I can barely understand, so in summary:
  • It's been planned since at least 2009(!) that   (STRlf) and so on should be renamed to   (STRl), for consistency with icons like   (ABZgl+l) which were renamed using the current suffix conventions.
  • Unfortunately,   (STRfq) was uploaded using that name (and so on) and they were used on several hundred pages on multiple wikis, so the files couldn't have been renamed without JJMC89 bot replacing all of the uses of the deprecated redirects.
  • Regardless, CommonsDelinker does almost the same thing for file redirects using file syntax, so this is basically what CommonsDelinker does but automated using a list of redirects. It's not really very different. If they want to stop file redirects from being replaced they can block CommonsDelinker first.
  • Why would you want to duplicate the BSicons locally? That's 5,000 more edits just to use STRlf instead of STRl (the replacement's already been completed AFAIK) and I don't think anyone is going to bother doing that.
I hope this helps. You can link here if necessary, I guess. Jc86035 (talk) 08:26, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

As long as I was active on commons I tried to inform dewiki about our goal to consistently name the BSicons, but noone cared. I always admonished you to inform dewiki about pendent changes ... a×pdeHello! 10:16, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
