Multi-purpose award template

Hi White Cat, What is your objective for wanting to put all awards into one single template? As I see it there is no benefit in doing this, the template logic will be more complicated and harder to maintain than several individually maintained award templates, bot assisted operations on award templates will have to be changed and they will inevitably be more complicated to implement and test. For instance, to demote a VI it is by far the easist to just change a template from {{VI|...}} to {{VI-former|...}}. With the present template the VI params would have to be taken out of you multipurpose template and a VI-former template would have to be added. Cheers, -- Slaunger 10:36, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

It is trivially easy to demote images via bots. It is still a basic find and replace operation. rather that replacing {{VI}} you would replace "|com3=1" to "|com3=2" for example. The actual code used in the templates isn't really complex either. I just used a few basic parser functions for convenience. Code could be made simpler.
I do not have objectives. While I was tagging images that are featured on other wikis I noticed that some images had a decent amount of clutter. I basically noticed a problem and came up with a solution. Then I decided, why shouldn't POTY be incorporated into this template? Then I decided why shouldn't Quality image be incorporated into this template and so on. I slowly came up with the idea on managing all awards via a single template. On the long run it makes it easier to maintain.
For example when you create a new award type, say "Valued Image" or "Picture of the Decade" (I just made this up) you can create a full functioning template by adding a single line.

Common practice

Per this. It had been my common practice to maintain two threads. It helps better communicate. Just a thought. I watch nobodies talk page. -- Cat ちぃ? 18:36, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Different users, different philosophies... ;-) I will add a note on the top of my talk page to make clear that there is no need to double-post on my talk page. -- Slaunger 19:11, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Closing VICs and VISCs

One the to-do list we have "Define and describe a process for closing VICs/VISCs". Are you able to do some draft text for that, as I'm not sure what's needed? --MichaelMaggs 16:18, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I will try to adress that shortly. I am a bit busy in real life (and spring has finally come to DK). -- Slaunger 21:08, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Still to do. --MichaelMaggs 20:30, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I know. Now, at least, I have initiated the work. It is a little difficult though as we have not settled on the unassessed status nor have we come up with good ideas on how to organize the VIs/VIS'. -- Slaunger 13:42, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

This is the one thing I still need to get my mind around. I've not closed any so far as I'm not exactly sure what needs to be done. --MichaelMaggs 20:48, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Are you still intending to incorporate this? I see it's still on our old list of things to do. --MichaelMaggs 17:31, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

It would still be nice to have for consistency with how it is done for VICs, but it is on the nice to have list. We do not need it to go on the air and we do not have to change anything about existing VISCs if we do it later. If you can figure out to setup a VISC I think you can also figure out how to transclude it in. That could also have been the solution for VICs, but I prefer the two-coloumn presentation, otherwise the list becomes too long I think.... -- Slaunger 18:59, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

RE: Your message

Sure, I'll try to help if their is anything I could help with ;)! Nice to see someone from Denmark here, heh. --Kanonkas(talk) 17:29, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, that is nice of you. The first thing I need help with is to compile a list of users who has test nominated valued image candidates and valued image set candidates. I need the list to send them all a message. To figure that out you need to explore the subcategories in Category:Valued images candidates and Category:Valued image set candidates. Just post the list here. Thank you. -- Slaunger 19:03, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Sorry but what kind of list do I need to post? Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 07:38, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Just something like
Cheers, -- Slaunger 08:03, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Thank you again but I'm still not sure where I do get those names, if you could give me more information. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 16:35, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
No problem. Here is an example. I say, explore subcateories in, e.g., Category:Valued images candidates. The first subact in that cat is Category:Declined valued images candidates. If you explore that cat you see a list of valued image candidate pages. The first one is Commons:Valued images candidates/Wind Point Lighthouse 071104.jpg. Now, open the page and have a look at it. there is a field called "Nominated by". It has the value Slauger (which happens to be me). You've got the first name on the list! Then proceed along these lines by exploring all candidate pages to compile a list of test nominators. -- Slaunger 18:07, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks again! Here I got the list over the declined list nominators:
Che. All the others were informed by MichaelMaggs. --Kanonkas(talk) 19:45, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I also need the ones Michael has informed as it relates to another message and I need the nominators from all subcategories from both Category:Valued images candidates and Category:Valued image set candidates. -- Slaunger 19:52, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

I suggest that you (or me or anyone) nominate the logo for both FP and QI and maybe on the other wikis with review thingies like that. Perhaps 2 or 3 days before it starts.... -- carol 20:23, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

He, he, that is funny idea. Have to think about it. Nobody can stop yuu though if you want to nominate it. -- Slaunger 20:27, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I love the non-standard "probably won't make it" submissions, enough that I try not to do it so often and lose the privilege or the impact. This is a nicer submission than the gray color test chart image and actually stands a chance of 'winning'. I would like some indication from you when things are 'almost' ready and I would like to do this closer to the date. I am actually waiting to nominate an image on English Wikipedia next June. Timing should have something to do with some images.... -- carol 21:28, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Concerning timing, I think you should choose June 1, 0:00 UTC as the time of nomination concurrent to when VI goes on-line... -- Slaunger 21:49, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
No need to remember any additional dates and times, it works for me in its simplicity and other things. Good call. -- carol 04:58, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

A follow up

Just a follow up... -- Cat ちぃ? 14:07, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, so this should actually work already. Well, that is good news (if it is correct). In that case one of my arguments for not moving pages is a no-argument. By the way, instead of moving pages one could create new subpages and let them redirect to the old one. Then the automated linking would work... -- Slaunger 14:17, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Unless the payed developers are lying this is pretty true. Right it is possible to create a redirect but moving the page takes the same amount of effort. -- Cat ちぃ? 00:04, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

deprecated function in your monobook.js

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

✓ DoneI have absolutely no idea what this means, but I have done as requested. -- Slaunger 17:25, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I salute you for your blind obedience ;-), now go and wire $1000 to the following swiss numeric account...
Hm. I probably should have elaborated a little more. includePage was a commons home-brew helper-function to load a javascript extension. There now is an official mediawiki way of doing it, which has several technical advantages over the old function, namely it works in gadgets and it avoids double inclusion. --Dschwen 17:33, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
OK, what was that account number again? -- Slaunger 17:52, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Valued images

You have abandoned the thread. Is there any reason for this?

-- Cat ちぃ? 00:03, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Ehm, yes. You had apparently left the project, and since you seemed to be the only user eager to also merge VI into the same multi-purpose template, I reasoned my efforts were better put elsewhere, like getting ready to launch VI. -- Slaunger 07:24, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Valued image templates

I received word a few days ago that there was to be a discussion of where the templates get placed. I have been thinking about more than just these templates since then (and before then as well). I would like to ask you a question or two about them; as some of my problem with other templates might be that I do not understand what they are supposed to say and do and was surprised at what they do say and do when I watched and experienced them in action.

Here is a question: What do you want them to do? It is not a multiple choice question but I have been thinking of a few possible answers to this question:

  • Encourage nomination of images that exist here and are known of by people with cameras or without.
  • Encourage editors
  • Encourage photographers

Here is another question: I was asked at question at Featured Pictures recently something like "do you think this is kindergarten"; my nominated image and the question disappeared too quickly for my reply but the answer to that would have been "yes". My real life experience, those little stars on papers that were very good stopped happening in first grade, but the approval from a teacher or someone who I respect did not stop to make me feel good about my work or that I could do a more decent job on it or whatever the message was. So I am not certain if those templates are there for encouragement even.

I watched a movie today that was safe enough for children but also entertaining enough for adults; a challenge that is not easily met, maybe. There are a lot of movies and other media like that -- so those templates should not be avoided (because of actual kindergartners and also people old enough to know better but who live in places whose theme song is to never grow up...), in my opinion, because the target audience is undefined (unless it is defined). This is the thing about kindergarten though -- if grades (stars or whatever mark the teacher determines is for something that is really good) get applied wrongly, those childrens lives are affected wrongly and the lesson might be about how life works but is this the proper place to deliver that message and another interesting point is this: if everyone agreed to stop delivering the message that life is unfair, would life become fair? (With only a few problems delivered by real life: nature and occasional honest accidents.)

You made this thing, and it looks pretty good. Unfortunately, I cannot read a plan and know how it will work without experiencing it -- QI is starting to work well for me, I enjoy it and the photographs nominated are really nice -- I think that there are some huge flaws in its structure, and I am enjoying that as well ;) All that being said, I would personally only respect your answer to that question I asked. You did a lot of work for this and on this and you had an idea in your minds eye that you worked towards.

Thank you for all of the time you put into it. -- carol 09:04, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

VI

Hey Slaunger, I know you're busy with the VI and apologize for taking your time. Just one question. What happens with the test images that have already passed as VI? Regards and best wishes, Muhammad Mahdi Karim 16:36, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Muhammad, Very relevant question. I actually intended to write to all test nominators yesterday to inform about this, but ran out of time... In short, all promotions and declines will be reset to an undecided state, all previous votes will be reset too. However, the project think that test promoted VICs will stand a good chance in the real VI world. We ave therefore decided to re-nominate those when the show opens. Since these cases are already well examined chances are that most of these will run smoothly through a new nomination, thus having a head start as compared to other candidates. More instructions will follow. Cheers, -- Slaunger 19:02, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Will see you at the opening :) Muhammad Mahdi Karim 11:51, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Valued images test review phase has ended

Thanks Kim, I'm really looking forward to the life version of VI. Lycaon 22:12, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, BTW, Acanthochondria cornuta.jpg has changed into Acanthochondria limandae.jpg (id was not correct) but an new Acanthochondria cornuta.jpg (this time with correct identification) was uploaded. Lycaon 22:50, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Thank you Hans. I noticed the name change earler on and also commented on the bots maneuvers requesting that logic was implemented such that subpage=old imge name.jpg was not replaced by the delinker when in VIC name space. These dupe removals will continue to destroy links from thumb display to review pages if this is not fixed or addressed in some other way. -- Slaunger 22:58, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Renaming

Hey, Slaunger. I want to let you know I'm not done renaming pages or updating links, but I'll be finishing later today. I just didn't want you to think that was it. Nice talk page message, BTW. ;) Rocket000 19:29, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

OK, thanks for informing me. Yeah, I stole that talk message directly from your page, it was the most polite and concise form I've seen until now - I had a very long and intricate version stating basically the same before stealing your formulation. Once you have done renaming, please tell me, and I can check (and if necessary correct) any missing links so to say. -- Slaunger 19:52, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Lost pages

I found these two uncategorized subpages. Not sure what to make of them. Commons:Valued images candidates/Usce tower and the Moon.jpg and Commons:Valued images candidates/Temple Saint Sava.jpg. Rocket000 22:54, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, and I think there are a few more. Seems like experimental proof-of-concept pages created by White Cat about two weeks ago in relation to discussions about the possibility of having nominations within several scopes referred to from one template. I will contact the user and ask what to do about them. (I propose thay are deleted). -- Slaunger 08:26, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

VI notices

Will you do the En.W VP notice this evening? What about the others where you have asked people but have not yet had a response? --MichaelMaggs 20:06, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I will notify other users. Concerning en:VP I am not so sure exactly where to post the announcement, do you? -- Slaunger 21:33, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

✓ Done on w:Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous). --MichaelMaggs 22:04, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, Michael. -- Slaunger 22:05, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Good night. I've left the Commons VP announcement to you! --MichaelMaggs 22:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Sleep well! -- Slaunger 22:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Re: asking people, I happened to see my name on the list and then was reminded that posting a notice at no:Tinget might be a good idea. Asking people on their talk pages may be a slightly more efficient method... ;o) Finn Rindahl 22:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
We have already posted notices on some user pages here. Do spread the word on pages of users who might be interested, be it here or on no.wikipedia. You can embed massages here in a subst'ed {{VI-message}} here if you like... -- Slaunger 22:13, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I can't really do much more - the message above wasn't to seriously intended ;) I'm travelling and going off wiki tomorrow, so I'll regrettably miss the grand opening. Good luck! Finn Rindahl 22:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh, well. But thanks for your help so far. Hav en god rejse, og du kan jo altid se på historikken hvordan det gik. ;-) -- Slaunger 22:21, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Takk for det! Og det var jo faktisk [1] en ting til jeg kunne gjøre. Finn Rindahl 22:36, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Glimrende. Så kom Nynorsk også med! -- Slaunger 22:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
