Crystal Clear app gimp.png Graphic Lab School/Images to improve

The Graphics Lab School is to initiate graphists who haven't local Graphic lab to collaborative image improvement. Like all the Graphic Labs, it helps improve all graphical content used by Wikimedia projects stored on the Wikimedia Commons.

The Wikigraphists work to improve the quality and clarity of images that are proposed to them by the community. This work most often involves extracting key elements from photos, removing distracting elements, and improving the general appearance of images. Creation of drawings, diagrams and maps is also within the scope of this project if the requests are clear and the work is feasible (less than one hour).

[edit] Making SVGs to Liechtenstein and the Netherlands' coat of arms

Article(s): All articles related to Liechtenstein and Netherland on any wiki

Request: Create a SVG version. This are high res. PNG images of the coat of arms of Liechtenstein and the Netherlands, with clear contours and single tone colors. The former country doesn't have an SVG CoA yet and the latter has 2, but very distorted. The lions and everything else should be Or (yellow) not orange. -- Alex:D (talk) 16:01, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Graphist opinion: I'll do the first one.--Amadscientist (talk) 18:18, 8 September 2009 (UTC) It needs a few tweaks now that I see it up loaded. The white mink at the bottum of the image needs a white background and a few of the shadows have been blurred as a top layer overlapping in a few spots and I need to fix a couple of lines that I didn't noticed don't match the correct thickness, but it's basicaly done.--Amadscientist (talk) 05:37, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I've managed to do a traced SVG version of my PNG image, resulting a pretty accurate coat of Arms of the Netherlands. The problem is, the space between the cords' loops and the top crown's arms is white instead of transparent. Can someone fix this problem? --Alex:D (talk) 16:13, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SVG scaled image is incorrect

The file looks fine in Inkscape, Firefox and Google Chrome, but the scaled version looks horrible. I have no idea how to fix this.

Request: -- LachlanArthur (talk) 09:58, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Graphist opinion:

✓ Done - hope the lines are fat enough? I'll make them fatter if not. Amada44 (talk) 11:26, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Inuit man with a kayak from 1854

Article(s):

Request: Excellent and valuable but damaged photo from 1854 (Sir Edward Augustus Inglefields expedition). Is it possible to do something? --Dmitry Rozhkov (talk) 11:01, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

How is it, is it satisfying?   ■ MMXXtalk  03:13, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, but the left sholder is still corrupted, the kayaks prow and the part of the paddle disappeared. Frankly speaking I hoped for FP-nomination after retouching. And it seems now that the result is much different from the original. What about leaving the right solid black part, which is lost, not trying to restore it, and concentrate on more careful restoration of the central part: the mans figure, the kayak, the stones and careful retouching the semicircular trace above it. Is it possible? --Dmitry Rozhkov (talk) 03:57, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
FP-nomination?? the quality of original image is very low and pixelated. did you stretch this image to fit it to FP requirements? because the largest file size in flickr is just (560 x 428 pixels), anyway I'll try to upload another one in next few days but I don't promises a featured picture.   ■ MMXXtalk  04:23, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
The image is from 1854, so quality is not so low. It wasn't uploaded from flickr. I changed source links in infobox --Dmitry Rozhkov (talk) 04:59, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
I have uploaded two new versions (one of them over edit1), do you think kayaks prow and top of the paddle should be like (Edit 2) ? I think (Edit 1) is better, by the way, I couldn't find link to larg file at the source that you provided, just a zoom and a purchase link, did you actually purchased this larger version from National Maritime Museum website?   ■ MMXXtalk  03:30, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Zoom IS the original file: [1] (open zoom on the new page, and you'll see) :) Many thanks for the restoration, I think it's much better now, as it's very close to the original picture. But we can keep both versions, of course. --Dmitry Rozhkov (talk) 10:19, 30 September 2009 (UTC)--Dmitry Rozhkov (talk) 10:19, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
No problem! btw, you didn't say which one is better?   ■ MMXXtalk  18:45, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
I think, the second Edit is better than the Edit1 --Dmitry Rozhkov (talk) 18:55, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
I uploaded a new version using "Edit2", tried to reduce JPEG artifacts.   ■ MMXXtalk  16:46, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Extraction of moth species

Article(s): http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Catalogue_Of_The_Noctuidae_In_The_Collection_Of_The_British_Museum

Request: I would like to ask for assistance with the extraction of images from all these plates I uploaded. I am making articles for the species on wikipedia. I was referred to the Lab by another user who thought someone here might be interested in helping out. I did about 30 myself by now, but there are roughly 170 plates with an estimate of 5000 species. I will continue extracting myself, but it is a bit much for me alone, so all help would be appreciated! -- Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:12, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Article(s): w:Coat of arms of South Ossetia, w:Coat of arms of Transnistria

Request: Vectorize. Connormah (talk) 04:33, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):

Done with Ossetia COA, as you can see I didn't add those grey shadows on hills because on Ossetia official website [3] COA is without and I presume it's official version.
Half done with Transnistria COA as I don't have Cyrillic fonts. --Justass (talk) 14:36, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] File:Frank LaGrotta photo.jpg

This image looks stretched out, washed out, and kinda pixely. Can someone please look at it and see what they can do with it? --Blargh29 (talk) 19:28, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

This is somewhat an attempt. Anyone else with a better improvement, by all means upload it. ZooFari 20:25, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Extracted logo from Inspector's report and cleaned image a little, sorry for not SVG, maybe someone could convert it. --Justass (talk) 13:58, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Coat of Arms of Australia

Article(s): w:Australia

Request: Does anyone want to take a shot at vectorizing this one, this time, properly, using gradients? Thanks. Connormah (talk) 00:49, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s): It wouldn't look better. The animals are very detailed and are not adequate for gradating. --Beao 11:20, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

I have made an attempt to vectorize this CoA earlier, but never finnished it nor uoploaded it to Commons. Now I uploaded it (File:Coat of Arms of Australia.unfinished.svg) and hopefully someone with higher skills can finnish it and make some improvements to it. --QWerk (talk) 16:15, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Map Fonts

Article(s):

Request: -- I made this image using inkscape, but the fonts come out at different sizes when rendered. If you click the svg you can see what it is supposed to look like. How can I fix this? By the way, the font is liberation sans. Which is supported under SVG fonts Michael miceli (talk) 20:11, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Graphist opinion:What's the problem? For once I think it's rendered right... But if it wouldn't it would be because the Wikimedia svg renderer, rsvg, has crappy text support. --Beao 16:34, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

I'd just like the font to be better. They aren't the same sizes as each other and some go out of the bounds of the parishes.Michael miceli (talk) 20:08, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SVG fills - surely there's a better way!

Request: I duplicated the <use xlink:href="#Fairfield" stroke="none" fill="red"/> line with all county names (e.g. New_Haven) and changed the fill to gold. Is there a better way? Guy0307 (talk) 07:23, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Graphist opinion:

xlink:href="#Fairfield" creates a clone of the Fairfield object above the original one. Instead of doing this you can simply change the colour of the original object by going to <path id="Fairfield" d="M -6382... and changing it to <path id="Fairfield" fill="red" d="M -6382.... Alternatively if you want to colour all of the counties go to <g stroke="black" fill="none" and change "none" to red. /129.215.149.96 13:33, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Request: Looks like there is a bit of a bad spot where two source maps were stitched together (about a third of the way down, right half of image). [edit] Tokyo Imperial Palace

Article(s): en:Tokyo Imperial Palace

Request: This is an SVG of the PNG used so far. If you click on the SVG itself, Firefox renders everything beautifully. However, the Mediawiki software creating PNGs out of the SVG screws up all the text. I don't know why, perhaps someone else does. As long as the text is not corrected, this can't be used as a substitute for the PNG graphic. Thank you. ExplicitImplicity (talk) 00:24, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, thanks Justass by recreating the Modern Talking signature in SVG. Someone can recreate these maps:

The english one is the correct one, because the beach have to be at the left, not like the spanish version. Before there's just to replace names to Spanish again.
