Yes, thank you very much. I already added it to the article nl:Carrouselfraude. I noticed one tiny error though: in step 3, you wrote "betaald ann B". This should be "betaald aan B". Is it possible to change this? And if so, could you also add a full stop after 'rekening' in step 2? Woodcutterty (talk) 20:34, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Sure, I put together an English translation (note that in Dutch it says 'carrousel' with two r's, in English only one r is used; I used the general term 'taxing authority' instead of a translation of the Dutch 'Belastingdienst'):
Heading: 'Missing trader fraud'
Caption: 'In carousel VAT frauds, a merchant fails to remit VAT to the taxing authority, despite charging his buyers the price of the sold goods plus VAT.'
1. 'Merchant A delivers goods to B in the Netherlands. Because this is a cross-border sale within the EU, he does not charge B any VAT.'
2. 'B sells the goods to C and charges him 21% VAT. He has to remit this to the taxing authority, but fails to do so. He commits fraud.'
3. 'C has payed 21% worth of VAT to B, which he can deduct on his VAT return. C delivers the goods to D, charging VAT.'
4. 'D can sell the goods back to A. Because this is a cross-border sale between two EU member states, D charges 0% VAT.'
'The carousel can start anew ...'
Country names mentioned on the carousel, clockwise: France, Netherlands, Netherlands, France.
Text within the carousel: 'No VAT remittance'; '...VAT is refunded' (the Dutch word 'wel' is a negation for which no good translation exists, as far as I know).
I'm not a native English speaker, so feel free to make any changes necessary. I also tried making a German translation, but I'm sure I made many mistakes. Perhaps you could correct them?
Heading: 'Karussellgeschäft'
Caption: 'Bei Karussellbetrug führt ein Unternehmer die von seinen Abnehmern bezahlte Umsatzsteuer nicht an die Steuerbehörde ab.'
1. 'Unternehmen A liefert Gütern an B in den Niederlanden.
Country names mentioned on the carousel, clockwise: Frankreich, Niederlande, Niederlande, Frankreich
Text within the carousel: 'Keine MwSt. abgeführt'; '...MwSt. erstattet'.

Many thanks Perhelion! That has solved the problem. To answer your question about converting text to path, some time in the last two years, rotated or bent text was not rendering, so I found that converting text to path solved the problem. It was probably the font copyright which caused non-rendering, but now I see that Wikimedia is able to handle Arial text, so I guess I do not need to convert any more. Am I correct in this? cheers Summerdrought (talk) 04:21, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

Help create a local Wikipedia 15 mark!

The 15th birthday of Wikipedia, and the Wikimedia movement, is less than one month away! The world will celebrate with us on January 15, 2016, and we need your help making local Wikipedia 15 logos available for more cultures, regions, and languages.

You see, instead of one single Wikipedia 15 birthday mark, we've worked with Wikimedians around the world to create dozens. From the International Space Stations to Fondue (thanks Switzerland!), these simple line drawings show the HUGE range of subjects you can learn about on Wikipedia.

If you are interested in helping with localised logo creation, you can find more information on Meta-Wiki.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Graphist opinion(s)

Request taken by Mliu92 (talk) 16:14, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

@Corkythehornetfan: I've uploaded new versions of the files.
Cropping was performed in text editor. Lines 13, 14 and 15 for each file contains viewBox and background elements which define the portion of the SVG displayed. For instance, in the logo SVG, the original file had this XML markup:
<svg version="1.1" xmlns:x="&ns_extend;" xmlns:i="&ns_ai;" xmlns:graph="&ns_graphs;"
  xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" x="0px" y="0px" viewBox="0 0 792 231.6"
  style="enable-background:new 0 0 792 231.6;" xml:space="preserve">
I updated the viewBox and background elements to the following:
<svg version="1.1" xmlns:x="&ns_extend;" xmlns:i="&ns_ai;" xmlns:graph="&ns_graphs;"
  xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" x="0px" y="0px" viewBox="40.6 40.6 710.8 150.4"
  style="enable-background:new 40.6 40.6 710.8 150.4;" xml:space="preserve">
The viewBox="x1 y1 x2 y2" element defines the top left corner of the display as and the bottom right corner as . So in the original SVG, the viewBox stretched from (0, 0) to (792, 231.6). I then looked for the padding size, which the original artist(s) helpfully defined under the "Spacing" group (look for <g id="Spacing">, which starts on line 123). Line 130 has the code <rect x="-0.1" y="0" class="st1" width="40.7" height="231.6"/>. This tells me the padding is 40.6 pixels, since the padding box is 40.7 pixels wide, but the origin is at -0.1 pixels. Since the branding guide says an equal amount of padding is taken all around the logo, that means equal padding in horizontal and vertical, so I start off my top left corner at . Note the bottom right corner has to be pulled in by 2x the padding value, because you account for padding on the left AND right (or top AND bottom), so that means the bottom right corner becomes . A similar approach was taken for the seal crop.
Sorry for the gory detail. This could have been done in Inkscape directly by moving the image and then setting the Document Properties (shift-control-D) under the "File" menu, but directly editing the SVG was a lot cleaner and quicker (despite how complicated the process sounds).
Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 16:14, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

New logo for Ladino Wikipedia

This text could require a new logo layout.
--Dereckson (talk) 04:17, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Look at the logo currently in place (lad:). All we are actually looking for here is for the ayin to be changed to alef in the word אנסיקלופידײה. Everything else is fine. I've mocked up copies of this already (see Phabricator:T118491), but apparently there was an issue with the antialiasing of this. All we need changed is that one letter. StevenJ81 (talk) 12:53, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
I would add that the font used is in the Arial family, and already contains a native beit-rafe glyph. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:41, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
@AnonMoos: All that having been said, I don't think our project would be averse to a redesign. I was merely trying to suggest that we would be content with a fix of the current design. StevenJ81 (talk) 02:45, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

@StevenJ81 What's going on now? Is there an understanding or activity problem?? User: Perhelion 21:36, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
@Perhelion: Yes, there is an understanding problem. The version we are starting from should be the version currently shown in the project itself, not the version that is posted here at Commons. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:22, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
@Perhelion @StevenJ81 This logo is at https://lad.wikipedia.org/static/images/project-logos/ladwiki.png.
Could I suggest another approach? Imagine you don't have a logo and we're back at the time you were preparing Incubator. Could you give us the requirements for a new logo with the full text to use? Restart (1 April 2016)

@Dereckson: OK. If we were starting from scratch, we would want the following text. We have checked the orthography and confirm it. (Latin alphabet lines are ltr; Hebrew alphabet lines are rtl.)

Vikipedya
La Ansiklopedya Líbera
בֿיקיפידײה
לה אנסיקלופידײה ליבירה

Presumably, the first of these lines is rendered in all caps, as is done on all the Wikipedia projects. Our preference for the second line is a serif font, upright (not italic), which again seems to be the practice on all the Wikipedia projects. As for the Hebrew alphabet lines, we really like the font used in the logo of the Hebrew and Yiddish Wikipedia projects, which is a light-serif font that either is, or resembles, one I know called David. At en:Unicode and HTML for the Hebrew alphabet#HTML code tables, this font is the one that renders on my computer, anyway. What I don't know is if this font (or one similar to it) contains the rafe glyph (בֿ) we use. If not, we'll have to try something else. But this is the way we'd like to go, if that's possible. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:15, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

@StevenJ81: The Hebrew Wikipedia logo media file doesn't contain font information.
Perhaps could you ask on the he.wikipedia village pump what the font is?
@AnonMoos and Perhelion: Would you know the font in use? --Dereckson (talk) 23:42, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

I think it is better to change the current horizontal format into vertical so it displays better in article prose. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 00:53, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
I don't see any real benefit to this information being in a SVG format. If you look at en:Tick-Tock model and en:List of Intel CPU microarchitectures#Roadmap you can see the roadmap clearly without the use of a SVG image. By keeping the information in a textual format it makes it easier for everyone to update the information without the requirement of editing a image every time the roadmap changes.Offnfopt(talk) 10:43, 18 June 2016 (UTC)
@Offnfopt: I agree the existing roadmap makes more sense as an embedded template (here is the one from English Wikipedia: Intel processor roadmap). It's clearly based on the original graphic and is easier - but still not easy - to update than the SVG. Also, the arrows are mostly missing (though its easy enough to read left-to-right) as a consequence of the table format. I will also work on updating the template, since it needs a little attention too (for instance Prescott is built on the 90nm process, not 130mm as the template implies). So ...

Request taken by Mliu92 (talk) 16:59, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

in Russian, for example
@Kopiersperre: I believe the existing roadmap also has some merits, since there are specific things that might work better as a graphic as well, such as embedded translation using <switch> and a comparison of feature sizes. Because the existing roadmap needed a lot of updates and corrections (the "version 2" and "version 3" copied some original errors, such as overlooking the simplification of the "Core" and "Atom" microarchitectures), I worked up a vertical rendition (thanks, Sameboat - 同舟!). I've included the existing translations to Russian (lang=ru), Ukranian (lang=uk), French (lang=fr), and Spanish (lang=es), and added a German translation (lang=de) using my rusty skills. Although I worked it up in Inkscape and saved as an "optimized" SVG, Inkscape has added a lot of fat to the SVG code which I have not bothered to clean up. Translations start on line # 215 in the file and it should be fairly straightforward to add more languages if needed.

Graphist opinion(s)
Interesting. The SVG file itself looks ok (though the words "Holy Roman Empire" could do with moving slightly). But the Wikimedia engine that converts it to a PNG has made a bit of a mess of it. I may have a look tomorrow, and see if I can improve things. Maproom (talk) 21:14, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
✓ Done Thanks, Maproom! It looks like the font change was the key. Rupert Clayton (talk) 21:23, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Hello Rupert Clayton, Maproom: Only for correction, there is nothing wrong here with the "Wikimedia engine" (librsvg renderer). Also browser don't showing line-breaks here, because there is only proprietary Inkscape code "sodipodi:role="line". So this has also nothing to do with the font-family. The image was changed by @MaxxL: , unfortunately he has nothing commented here (what he had done, saved as Normal SVG not Inkscape SVG) and he inserted an false font. "Liberation" is a not matching name and should be replaced with "Liberation Sans, sans-serif"User: Perhelion 02:13, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi! I would be very grateful if someone could turn this image from the current .png to a scalable .svg. It doesn't need to have the shiney bits, if this causes too much trouble to anyone. Although this image would only be for an article in the Spanish Wiki, I intend to start just now one in the English Wiki as well. --Cantabrucu (talk) 13:01, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

The graph could use an update (data here), but even more so it needs a re-scaling: populations grow exponentially, which means the vertical axis needs a logarithmic scale. --Bender235 (talk) 20:55, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

@Bender235: I can convert it into svg and update it so it's easier to edit in the future.

  • But on the data link you provided I can't find the data. I want the data very easy to access, year-population. If you can't link me to data like that then please add it here and ping me then I will do this, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:31, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
I will check that excel file. I hope you understand that we graphic workers do just that. We very seldom have any knowledge on the subject so we need that kind of base information presented for us in a simple way, then we do the rest, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:56, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

@Bender235: The previous graph starts at 1829 but the data in the excel file starts at 1788, do you want the new to start at 1788 or 1829? --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:05, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
The data for entire Australia starts at 1788. But this graph is Western Australia, which starts at 1829. Make sure to be in the right row (it should be 33). --Bender235 (talk) 18:33, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

@Bender235: Now there is a draft for you to look at and give me feedback on. The colors and type of lines are picked so that they will work for people with color vision problems. Give me feedback, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:18, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Looks good so far. I don't think it is necessary to have separate trends for male and female. Just the total population trend would be enough IMHO. --Bender235 (talk) 18:22, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
@Bender235: I have uploaded two versions as I already had it made:

It's a Christian organization in Norway called "God-Søndag" and I'd be very happy if anyone could make a logo for that. PS: Note the "Ø" that's not in the English alphabet. Could you please try with much colors, less colors, maybe some Christian signs/symbols, maybe without, use the whole name (God-Søndag) or the abbreviation "GS". Request
This is a big ask, and may need it's own Wikiproject, Thanks to a request I put into the Department of Transport I was able to get a set of EPS files, being the figures in the Traffic Signs Manual. These are very slowly being uploaded to the category mentioned. However, the EPS->SVG conversion isn't perfect, and some rendering fixes had to be applied, which is why it is taking time to get the full set uploaded.
I am in need of some more experienced graphists famiar with EPS and SVG to help review and quality control the files uploaded so far.
Some problems I've personally identified so far are :
  • Border elements that have been recombined from single EPS path elements.
  • Unclosed paths.
  • Font substitutions (for Commmons/Wikisource rendering issues.)
There is only so much a single volunteer can do, and I would appreciate this being a community effort.
Update - Having to restart owing to some font rendering issues.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 00:39, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):

Hi @Markov, unfortunately the terms in French are too long in number of letters as well in terms of typesetting. That would be not different in German, but I omitted to the words „epoch“ and „era“ in my translation. If that is just as acceptable to the French version, I would be glad to provide the appropriate edit. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 14:13, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi, MagentaGreen, really nice work for the german version ! Is it possible, in french, to :
  • keep "ÈRE "
  • omit "PÉRIODE DU " or "PÉRIODE DE L'"
  • keep "Époque " ?
In German, you wrote NEOGEN instead of KARBON (on -359 line), should omit -318, and you forgot Paläozän and Eozän (on the right)

With the regional coordinator of Wikimedia Italy (User:Kaspo) we are reorganizing the network of users living in (or interested in) Tuscany and working on different platforms and I think it would be nice to have a barnstar to give them because some of them did a great work so far. Nothing elaborate, and if I may without the modern post-1975 "pegasus flag" which is IMHO "lame", but as you like it... I am also not a fan of a specific monument like the duomo of Florence or the tower in Pisa as a central image, but again that's just my opinion. Request
Please clean up these files and reduce Talkington to 444 x 109, as well as reduce the coding. (I created the text for Talkington here, but I didn't do something right... even after following this page! ) The last three files above are PNG files uploaded by another user and saved as a "SVG" image. The excess space around those will need removed, as well. The colors are found here, but Red is #CC0000 (204,0,0), Gray (204,204,204), and black is #000000. I'm not talented enough yet to fix the problem! Thanks! --Corkythehornetfan 21:30, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
The spacing on "your" Talkington College logo uses incorrect font, spacing, and alignment. Standards for TTU departments follows what I originally uploaded. Lubbockite (talk) 22:32, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
The current version is YOUR version. The one I uploaded uses "Charter", the school's font. Just let the experienced editors fix this for us. Corkythehornetfan 23:18, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

  • File:Talkington Visual & Performing Arts logo.svg is ✓ Done. Not sure why the specific requirement of 444 x 109, I went ahead and ignored that and just imported the vector directly from the pdf in the TTU_DblT_CollegeofVisualandPerformingArts.zip archive linked on the page above and left it at its default size and cleaned up the markup. If no one else does any of the others, I'll try to import some more of the other official ones from the zips. I'll try to do at least one a day. Offnfopt(talk) 23:30, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
I downloaded that zip file. In the expanded zip is - TTU_DblT_CollegeofVisualandPerformingArts.zip\TTU_DblT_College of Visual and Performing Arts\For PRINT LAYOUT and GRAPHIC DESIGN\Vector PDF\TTU_DblT_CoVaPA_2line_fl4C.pdf from which the logo extracts to 451 x 109, and has the same red as seen on the web page - https://www.depts.ttu.edu/communications/identityguidelines/idguidelines/ttu/official/double-t.php rather than the darker version we currently have. The size difference from what Corky quotes above seems to be just the ™ symbol. I uploaded that version, and reverted because I may be missing something, but it's there in the file history in case it's useful.

I agree we shouldn't be altering the text from the official version, unless there is an updated one. I understand the college has changed name to "J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts", but on their website (http://www.depts.ttu.edu/cvpa/) they use the generic "TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY" logo with no school name. It's not up to us to redesign the logo, so if there is no official version with the new name perhaps we need to do as they do and use the generic one, at least until an official version is available. I put the generic version, from https://www.depts.ttu.edu/communications/identityguidelines/downloads/ttu/TTU_DblT_AlternateSignature.zip in the history too, in case we decide to do that.

Adding to the confusion, their website uses the darker red too - strikes me that maybe the University style guide is not being properly followed by the schools, or needs updating. Again, perhaps I'm missing something... -- Begoon 03:05, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Just looked into this, the lighter color is what is imported if you import without using a color profile and the darker color is what I got when importing with a color profile. The darker color  #CC0000  is correct according to the colors listed here. I went ahead and uploaded the colors you get when importing without a color profile and reverted so someone else can make that decision to revert if need be. Offnfopt(talk) 04:15, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
Here's something interesting. Do you see a difference in red between this png thumbnail rendered from the current svg, and the current svg itself?
Incidentally, you were correct - Inkscape changed the red from #c00 importing the pdf - Illustrator does not. The pdf has *:::<xmpG:swatchName>4C Red</xmpG:swatchName><xmpG:type>PROCESS</xmpG:type><xmpG:tint>100.000000</xmpG:tint><xmpG:mode>RGB</xmpG:mode><xmpG:red>204</xmpG:red><xmpG:green>0</xmpG:green><xmpG:blue>0</xmpG:blue> in raw text - for rgb 204,0,0 - but Inkscape alters that to 238,0,0 while Illustrator preserves it. I'll stick with Illustrator for pdf import, since I'm not seeing how to get Inkscape to change that behaviour. -- Begoon 06:35, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
They may not use it on the webpage itself, but that is their logo. The red should be #c0, but Inkscape does place it as #e0. I have yet to see this version. I have only seen this version. Corkythehornetfan 21:41, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Would anyone like to help with the community revived Commons app (IEG Grant)? We would need some icons for near-by places that motivate users to go there and take a picture of them. The details are in this Github thread. Icons for "bridge", "river", "church", "general building", etc.. would be needed. Thank you for you help! --Tobias1984 (talk) 07:35, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
I second this request, the app would look so much better with nice illustrations! The list of needed illustrations is: city, waterbody, railwaystation, river, park, forest, event, sport, university, road, isle, building, mountain, bridge, church. Thanks a lot! BMacZero: Wonderful! It is very nice, 1000 times better than the icons we have now :-) By the way, the grey circle is not a requirement, it just happens to be the first icon we found for "undefined", so it could as well be rectangular icons, actually right now we just use photographs like this (photographs are not good, not abstract enough). Would you mind create icons for the other categories? We will start using them as soon as you are done. Syced (talk) 03:30, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
The icons look great, BMacZero! :) Misaochan (talk) 06:29, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
I agree: They look great. But they should be converted to a vector format, so they can be displayed in different sizes without loss of quality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkarcher (talk • contribs)
In addition to the categories I mentioned above, an "undefined" category in the same style would be great, a lot of items are actually undefined so it is one of the most important ones. Cheers! Syced (talk) 10:38, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
Great, I can easily upload them in vector format. I'll chip away at them this weekend. BMacZero (talk) 01:01, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks BMacZero! I'll add whatever is ready to the app next week, they look much better than what we currently have. :) We would also like to add you to our credits file, would you prefer your Commons username or something else? Cheers! Misaochan (talk) 11:39, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

Just as a note for prioritization of symbols. This query shows what P31 ('instance of' on Wikidata) value most things with coordinates have in a country: query. A lot of items are also 'railway stations' or 'gatehouses' for example. I think a few thousand missing images would warrant its own symbol. You can switch the countries to see what is most missing where you live. --Tobias1984 (talk) 18:41, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Nice tool, I'll refer to that. I'll start with the more general ones and work down if I have time. BMacZero (talk) 01:01, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

I've added this table to keep track of the icons in the Commons App Landmark Icons category.Offnfopt(talk) 13:01, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

I've also been working off of the results of the query for United States (Q30). I tried running the query without a country constraint but it times out. Some possibly notable entries that show up much higher on the US results are 'radio station', 'city', 'airport', 'neighborhood', 'protected area', 'sports venue', and 'ghost town'. Get letter "W" from English Wiktionary logo to make a favicon

Please create a separate image that is just the slanted, red "W" of File:WiktionaryEn - DP Derivative.svg.
The purpose of this request is creating a favicon for the English Wiktionary that is compatible with the current logo. (The favicon enwikt is currently using is basically just ['w], which is compatible with the older logo.)
After the favicon is created, it will need approval of the community before it can be used. I will create a new discussion on enwikt with that proposal.

Making the links to the galleries more obvious on the Commons:Featured_pictures page

Request
Hi, I've been working with some people in publishing and social media at UNESCO (where I work) and all of them have found it incredibly useful for finding suitable images, however many of them have missed the link to the gallery of more images and misunderstood that the images on this page were all that was available. Would it be possible to come up with a way to make the more>> button more prominent? Perhaps putting the links inside buttons of some sort (perhaps like the more details button in media viewer?). Another small request would be to disable the links for the symbols next to the categories, this is confusing for non Wikimedians to click on what they assume is a category and end up with a big version of the symbol instead. --John Cummings (talk) 10:20, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s)
A Wikigraphist friend e-mailed me and asked "why do you need this? wouldn't the flags be enough?" Good questions-here's why:

1) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting/Userboxes -we've been having some users make their own userboxes for their own country's Scouting, which is great except they've been using their country's copyrighted logos. ☹ This covers every country we have members in. I would think flags are okay, but they are using the emblems.

2) there are Scouting WikiProjects in several languages, so these could be used by multiple Scouting WikiProjects

3) the colors for Germany are not Austria, they are based on the original German Scouting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutscher_Pfadfinderbund

The horizontal axis is labelled "Alcohol content, by volume". But no units are given. I suspect that what it shows is not volume, but percentage of alcohol, calculated by volume. If that is right, a better label would be "Percentage alcohol (ABV)". Maproom (talk) 09:45, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
