Proposal new Category:flag photographies[edit]The Category:flags and his subcategories contain numerous designed flags, and an increasing number of flag photographies. For these photographies a separate category is desirable. That is why I propose Category:Flag photographies and corresponding subcategories, similar to the coat of arms photographies, which for Germany have been put in the Category:coat of arms photographies from Germany and his subcategories. Duplicate flags
[edit]What should happen with flags of different countries/municipalities/purposes that actually have the same appearance? So far I created an Image:... page and used a redirect instead of uploading a duplicate image but that robs us of a separate description page for the other purposes. Is there an official policy on this? If so, where and which? --Johannes Rössel (talk) 20:45, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Categorization of flags with stripes
[edit]I noticed a few problematic patterns in the structure of the categories for flags which I am willing to fix. However, I'm not sure whether they are truly problems or the result of prior consensus:
- The categorization of flags based on stripe colour is not hierarchical. This seems to be most noticeable in the subcategories of Category:Flags with three stripes of three colors, so I will use Category:Flags with three horizontal stripes of three colors as an example: According to my understanding of the existing categorization scheme, for every combination of three distinct colours, the permutation of those colours in alphabetical order is the parent category of the remaining permutations of those three colours. All of these categories then also contain images or categories for flags that have stripes with their respective listed colours in order from top to bottom. For example, Category:Flags with three horizontal stripes of blue, red and white color combination is a parent of Category:Flags with three horizontal stripes of blue, white and red color combination. The problem with this is that flags with blue, white, and red stripes are not flags with blue, red, and white stripes, which this categorization scheme implies. To fix this, I propose that categories where this pattern occurs be restructured to follow the mathematical definitions of combination and permutation. The order of colours in a category for a combination of colours would not be significant, and the order of colours in a permutation of those colours would be significant. The existing categories would thus be renamed to names that end with 'permutation' and would become subcategories of new categories with names that end with 'combination'. In the case of the categories I mentioned as an example, a new category Category:Flags with three horizontal stripes of blue, red and white color permutation would contain the existing categories, which would be renamed to Category:Flags with three horizontal stripes of blue, red and white color permutation and Category:Flags with three horizontal stripes of blue, white and red color permutation.
- An example of the same problem from outside of Category:Flags with three stripes of three colors: The category Category:Horizontal bisection blue and green flags is a parent of Category:Horizontal bisection green and blue flags.
- I'm not that familiar with heraldry, but there are a few category relationships that seem to be outright incorrect. For instance, Category:Vertical white centered tricolor flags currently is a parent of Category:Flags with three '''horizontal''' stripes of green, red and '''yellow''' (centered) color combination, which matches in neither orientation of stripes nor central colour.
- Many navigational templates used on flag category pages, such as {{Tricolor8}} and {{Bicolor9}}, aren't generating proper links to parent category pages. For example, {{Tricolor8}} as used on Category:Flags with three horizontal stripes of blue, red and white color combination produces the redlink Category:Tricolor color combination instead of (I presume) Category:Flags with three horizontal stripes of three colors.
