None of the nominees have yet made any statements themselves. I want to point out that there is no point in appointing administrators if they don't intend to do anything.... / Fred Chess 07:53, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was asked if i agreed on being nominated. I didn't even knew if i was at last proposed or not, until came to COM:RFA now. I was kindly surprised on seeing so much support in so little time. :) Is anything i should state apart from Thank for your support, i'll try to do my best ? I think the nominee can't vote for himself[1] so there's little to say... Platonides 11:12, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to add a statement, you can do that at the top of this nomination right below Sanbec's text.
It is important you know why there is a need for Spanish speaking admins. You guys need to verify many images uploaded by Spanish speakers who add incorrect license tags, and add the right tags to them (for example {{Nsd}} and {{Nld}} and {{Delete}}) and speedy delete images that are obvious copyright violations. WarX pointed out how many Spanish users are lying about the licenses because they don't understand them. You would need to make it clear to uploaders what licenses are OK, which you should do on Spanish Wikipedia, and also by contacting them on Commons.
You should also know how copyrights work, so that you can help those users who want to know. So it is nice if you read through Commons:Sobre las licencias.
Monitor special:Recentchanges and look for copyright violations uploaded by people who speak Spanish (often you can tell, for example a screenshot from Spanish television, or a logo of a Spanish corporation or club), then you tell them on their talk page that Commons does not allow this. Check if they have uploaded more images. Also, look through category:Unknown and if you see something you know was uploaded by a Spanish speaker, notify them. Often users upload image after image without understanding they are acting incorrectly, so look through the rest of their contributions too.
Some other things that should be done is to translate more help pages and templates. For example, Template:Anonymous work need a Spanish translation. And some system messages too -- look at MediaWiki:Uploadtext/es, this should be written to look like MediaWiki:Uploadtext.
Now, this is what I want from the administrators.... because many of us don't speak Spanish, and Sanbec and Anna can't do everything  ;-)

Yes, i read the WarX mail. I don't know if you noticed that i answered him the same day (5 days ago), and translated the Template:Copyrighted free use he mentions. However, i'm still waiting for someone to include {{/lang}} in it.
However i'd also bet most uploaders even doesn't read them, so really difficult they understand anything. At es:[2] i designed a new MediaWiki:Uploadtext trying to improve our old pieced upload form and trying to give them answers to the most common errors. I still had to tell them things that were on the list (not even counting the endless no-source no-license).
What i don't agree with you is in the statement that the work is to verify images uploaded by Spanish speakers. Unless someone can give me a list of Spanish speakers uploads, it's not possible. You verify images.
I use to give the english warnings, as it's really difficult to say if a user is spanish speaker or not. One-time © violators don't use to have babel templates. I can only deduce it from their usernames, but most are language-neutral. Sometimes you can also say it from a Spanish description but yesterday i had problems to determine if a user spoke spanish or not, as it seemed spanish, but a word wasn't (i found out it was in catalan).
It would be nice if on register users had some like a wizard to set their userboxes properly. The unique login should give a way to know it.
Template:Anonymous work/es done, but you should better say it at the Spanish Village Pump: Commons:Café.

  1. Couldn't find now info on one sense or another, so that norm could be anywhere else. :S
  2. Where we followed the commons policy until we stopped local uploads.
