It's that time of year again when we get started for Wiki Loves Monuments. By 2022, we have completed twelve iterations of the international edition. Thanks to all other organizers, participants, sponsors and partners, who collectively achieved this feat. Last year we received 153,000+ images.

Responsibility for national organizers

[edit]

We would like to emphasize that the international team coordinates the national competitions: we are not qualified to tell you exactly how to organize your competition. National teams are best placed to decide whether and how to organize a competition in your country. We will try to set an international framework, and assist in the exchange of best practices. We expect that national organizers will follow the guidelines and regulations set by their national governments, combined with the Wikimedia Commons guidelines and principles for photographs.

Transparency of national juries

[edit]

The international team has been receiving feedback over the last couple of years for better transparency of national juries, to avoid potential conflict of interest organizers may have with jurors. National organizers should now publish their information (username or name) of jurors and rounds organized at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2023/Juries.

Timeline

[edit]
Getting started with Wiki Loves Monuments - Wikimania 2022 recording.

Many organizers welcomed the extended timeline in the last three years. National organizers have the opportunity to choose a different range of dates for their national competition. You can pick any range of 30 or 31 days within the period of September-October 2023 as your upload dates. That means that one country does not have to use the same upload dates as another. This will allow flexibility according to the situation in various countries.

  • The last date for all uploads is 31 October 2023, and any uploads beyond that date will be ineligible for consideration.
  • The jury deadline will be December 5, 2023, for all countries.

Exchange of knowledge

[edit]

National organizers innovate in many ways to make their competitions successful. While some try out new social media campaigns, some organize an interesting photo walk, and others use Wikidata to make the upload process easy. It would be helpful for other organizers to learn from these practices. Here is the page where you can share your strategies and let the community know what worked, what didn’t and any suggestions for others interested in the idea.

International contest prizes

[edit]

The national juries will nominate photos for the international contest, which has its own jury and awards.

In 2023, there are ten main prizes and two categories of special prizes available for the international contest. These are listed below. All top-15 winners of the international contest will receive a certificate. On top of these, the following prizes will be awarded to the international winners in 2023:

  1. Up to €2000 in in-kind prize*
  2. Up to €1500 in in-kind prize*
  3. Up to €1200 in in-kind prize*
  4. Up to €900 in in-kind prize*
  5. Up to €600 in in-kind prize*
  6. Up to €600 in in-kind prize*
  7. Up to €500 in in-kind prize*
  8. Up to €400 in in-kind prize*
  9. Up to €300 in in-kind prize*
  10. Up to €300 in in-kind prize*

This amount can be used for an editing or photography related prize or a donation to a Wikimedia compatible cause. The prize is selected by the winner and coordinators jointly. The winner will be able to propose the exact prize and vendor, pending approval by the prize coordinator (considering convenience, accounting and scope reasons). The value of the prize includes any customs or taxes that may need to be paid at the time of purchase to deliver the prize to the recipient. Any additional (customs) charges that are due later will be the responsibility of the recipient.

Special awards in 2023

[edit]

We would like community members to suggest ideas for these special prizes. For example, underrepresented regions, the most numbers of unique monuments covered etc. Please send in your ideas via email or by posting on the Commons talk page by 31st of August.

Organize!

[edit]

Lastly, and most importantly, if you are interested in organizing the competition for your country/region, please sign up at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2023/Participating countries.

If you need any support with organizing, please reach out to one of the international team members, or you can also post an email to the international organizers mailing list at wlm-global-org@lists.wmnederland.nl, or ask your question on the WLM help desk page on Wikimedia Commons.
