Summary[edit]

Description
English: Amwell St Area, Clerkenwell, London, EC1. From a footpath that once connected Myddelton Passage with Hardwick Street - but that is now gated at its halfway point due to the neighbouring Metropolitan Water Authority Headquarters having been turned into apartments - the Grade II-listed brick base of a former windmill (built in 1709) can be seen ahead in this compound that is still owned by the Thames Water Authority. In these grounds of "The New River Head" (aqueduct terminus) and to the left of this picture, although not visible, is the huge "Outer Pond" covered reservoir and this former windmill once served to pump water uphill to the Claremont covered reservoir (a.k.a. the Top Reservoir) that is still in use beside Pentonville Road. The seven storey apartment block is Charles Allen House on Amwell Street.
