Summary
[edit]DescriptionEntrance to the village of Llandyfrïog - geograph.org.uk - 991655.jpg |
English: Entrance to the village of Llandyfrïog The use of two dots over the "i" is a curiosity. This diacritical mark is called in English a diaeresis, but we Welsh call it a "didolnod". People of German extraction call it an "umlaut". In Welsh, it is used, rarely but systematically, to show that an "i" is not consonantal (i.e pronounced like "y"), but is a full vowel, is separate from the adjacent vowel, and is emphasised. In the correct pronunciation of Llandyfrïog, the emphasis is on the "ï". Other parish names using it spring to mind: Rhostïe near Llanilar, Llandybïe near Ammanford, and Llandegaï near Bangor. The Ordnance Survey rarely renders it correctly. |
