  • Scope and content: PAUL DAVIS, 49, OF NEWTON, WEST VIRGINIA, NEAR CHARLESTON SEATED IN A LOG SMOKEHOUSE HE HAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. SUFFERING FROM THIRD STAGE (MOST SEVERE) BLACK LUNG SYMPTOMS. HE CANNOT LIFT THE LOGS, SO HIS SONS HELP HIM ON THE WEEKENDS. DAVIS STARTED IN THE MINES DEC. 8, 1941, FOR $4.55 PER DAY AND RETIRED IN 1969. A MEMBER OF THE MINGO COUNTY BLACK LUNG ASSOCIATION. HE HELPED WRITE THE BLACK LUNG LAW. HE AND UNITED MINES WORKER PRESIDENT ARNOLD MILLER SLEPT ON CHURCH FLOORS IN WASHINGTON, D.C., WHILE WORKING ON THE BILL
