Wikidata weekly summary #557
- Events
- A citation hunt program was organized for secondary school students at IIS School in Dubai as part of the 74th Republic Day celebration of India. 16 students participated, with different mother tongues and from different states of India living as expatriates in Dubai. The goal was to increase references for Wikidata statements based on research. The students were introduced to the importance of protecting India's history on the internet, and were taught how to edit Wikipedia and Wikidata. They were given a special event page on Wikidata with instructions and a list of Wikidata items to add citations to, and they searched for references in their textbooks and search engines to add to the Wikidata items.More details are given here.
- Next Linked Data for Libraries LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group Working Hour January 30, 2023: The #1Lib1Ref campaign is afoot, so we will be working on adding references to Wikidata statements. We'll have some data for you to work with, but you're welcome to bring your own. We'll be mainly working with adding webpages as sources, but if you want to get experience using books or articles as sources, we recommend bringing some to the session to use as references for Wikidata items you have identified. You are, as always, welcome to bring your own project to work on Event page

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Problems
- Last week, for ~15 minutes, some users were unable to log in or edit pages. This was caused by a problem with session storage. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 31 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 February. It will be on all wikis from 2 February (calendar).
Future changes
- Wikis that use localized numbering schemes for references need to add new CSS. This will help to show citation numbers the same way in all reading and editing modes. If your wiki would prefer to do it yourselves, please see the details and example CSS to copy from, and also add your wiki to the list. Otherwise, the developers will directly help out starting the week of February 5.

Template:PD-Coin scan
Hello
I think that your original symbol with the two coins on Template:PD-Coin scan was good. Right now (with the merge), it's much too small to be clear to the reader.
If we have a "scanner" icon, and a "coins" icon, it will be enough to convey the meaning visually. The relative scales are not really important if they're only symbols.
How about reverting it?
- Anonimski (talk) 20:16, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- Anonimski, You could make the coins in the SVG bigger, I was planning on asking someone in the Graphics Lab's illustration workshop to fix it but didn't find the time yet. As an abstract symbol details are still important, not everything has to be huge and the coins are located on top of the scanner. Having a scanner and then coins below unnecessarily adds multiple images for something which could be a singular concept.
Honestly I thought that the original image works well with the red lighting being the act of "scanning" and that the forbidden mark is a diagonal red stripe. But as you thought that this could be confused for a symbol of prohibition I decided to merge the two (2) images you used. I would have to wait until my wife's done with her laptop (which is tomorrow) until I can make the coins bigger in the image. I still think that having one (1) image for the concept works better. — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:43, 31 January 2023 (UTC)- Ah, just to be clear, I didn't mean that there should be two large coins on the top of the scanner glass. What I meant was that the original image that you used (two coins with transparent background) was clear enough. And the picture of the scanner can be separate from the coins, as in the "21:04, 30 January 2023" rev. of the page. It should be obvious enough with a quick look.
- - Anonimski (talk) 21:15, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- Anonimski, I understand what you're trying to say, but as a concept image having coins on the scanner is still quite recognisable. Even on my mobile device I can see the coins on the scanner. — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:31, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
By the way, there's a problem with the background transparency of File:Coin scan icon.svg. - Anonimski (talk) 23:05, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- Anonimski, I'll ask at the Graphic Lab's illustration workshop if they can fix it there later. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 23:10, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
One more thing, perhaps Template:PD-coin rubbing should have a large C in the beginning to align with the main one for scanning? - Anonimski (talk) 23:30, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- Anonimski, that's a good idea, though I'm not sure if I should manually change this template on every page where it is used or if it will happen automatically through the redirect. — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 16:35, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
Sudoku V2 game
I've recently found a sudoku game with an extremely similar logo to File:Sudoku V2 Game, Groningen (2019) 03.jpg#filelinks and I'd like to know what brand it is (as mine is unbranded), could you tell me if yours has a brand name on it anywhere? 154.20.121.35 05:14, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- 154.20.121.35, This actually isn't mine as I saw it in a second-hand shop and from what I can find on the device no brand or origin of manufacture is listed anywhere. My guess is that these were manufactured in the 1990's or early 2000's (likely more the latter as it's manufactured in the People's Republic of China). It has a patent registration number. Maybe you could upload photographs of your device and I could find out more about it. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:52, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- Here are my pictures of the device, front and back. The back reads "MODEL NUMBER ASI8193" and I cannot find a patent number. Thank you. Nuppington (talk) 17:30, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- Nuppington, if I'd guess I'd say that it's the Sudoku Master™ Handheld - 102608, at Sportsman's Guide (Source: www.sportsmansguide.com), see this image (Internet Archive's Wayback Machine). Unfortunately the original webpage is gone. Possibly it's this eBay listing "2006 ROCKETECH SUDOKU MASTER HANDHELD ELECTRONIC PUZZLE GAME IN ORIGINAL PACKAGE" (Internet Archive's Wayback Machine), which was manufactured in 2006. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:21, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- The main difference is the colours, I haven't been able to find your version, but some seem to include the "MASTER" branding and others don't. As I said before I guessed that it was from the early 2000's which seems accurate as most "Made in China" devices only seemed to have been manufactured after the People's Republic of China entering the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on 11 (eleven) December 2001 which is when we saw a large influx of "Made in China" devices due to the outsourcing of manufacturing which happened at lightning speed. And by 2008 technology was far beyond this so I think that 2006 is an accurate date. — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:24, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- Another possibility is that these devices were mass-manufactured without branding and then later companies added their branding to it. This is, for example, how earplugs are produced today. Chinese factories often do this. Mainly as I don't just see "Rocketech" there's another brand named "Excalibur" and I saw an Ecosia result which listed like 6 (six) different brand names for similar devices. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:32, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
