File:Time series of active COVID-19 cases, most affected US states.svg

[edit]

Hello, Getreuer,

It looks like you are editing this graph and I was wondering if you could add the state of Louisiana. Outside of New York, it has the fastest rising number of COVID-19 cases. Thanks! Liz (talk) 04:47, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz: Thanks for pointing this out. I was plotting states with the most active cases. I revised the graph to states with the most active cases per million people, which includes Louisiana, and this normalization by population seems like a better sense of severity than counting cases in an absolute sense. --Getreuer (talk) 07:46, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Most affected countries"

[edit]

Why do you include Belgium in your covid graph, but not Russia or Turkey, either of which has significantly more active cases than Belgium? --84.22.38.22 15:33, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the good question. The plot is produced by a script that automatically selects which countries to include in the plot. The script considers which countries are "most affected" by the number of active cases and number of deaths. Of course, deaths represent greater human suffering and give a sense of pressure on the health system, so this has some weight in the selection heuristic. Belgium is (as of 2020-05-02) in the plot because the number of deaths in Belgium is more than double that of Russia or Turkey. By any decision though, it is somewhat arbitrary what to include in the plot. I would like to show a lot more countries, yet the more lines the plot shows, the more difficult it gets to read. It needs a balance. --Getreuer (talk) 21:57, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New color scheme for country charts

[edit]

Thanks for your great work. Since you did not reply on File_talk:Time_series_of_active_COVID-19_cases,_most_affected_countries.svg directly, I'd like to repeat my suggestion here: How do you feel about some common agreement on which color to use for which country? Here's an example how I do apply the colors for certain countries. By now we have added some more colors due to the ongoing development of the corona infections. Please see my suggestions on en:User:Traut. Does your tool support dashed and dotted line styles? --Traut (talk) 07:20, 25 May 2020 (UTC) [reply]

@Traut: Thanks for reaching out (twice) and for this suggestion. Sorry I missed your first message. I made a more detailed response on en:User talk:Traut. --Getreuer (talk) 16:08, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. For your concerns about dotted vs. dashed, see e.g. this chart below. It's far too many lines - but we do have 16 states within Germany, so it's that many. But the dotted line is significanly different, isn't it? --Traut (talk) 16:38, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
