French parliament diagrams

[edit]

Hello Inquisitio17,

thank you for uploading seat distribution diagrams of historic French legislatures. They would however be more helpful if you could

  1. indicate the source(s) you used,
  2. provide a key which colour represents which parliamentary group or party,
  3. upload them under a more descriptive file name (rather than something generic like File:Svgfiles 2023-10-10-00-24-03-460051-10693878058343628393.svg),
  4. and categorise them appropriately (e.g. in Category:Seatings of the Chamber of Deputies of the French Third Republic and Category:French legislative elections (1885))

Moreover I wonder how the discrepancies between different diagrams on the same chamber in the same year can be explained. For example Category:French legislative elections (1885) contains five different diagrams of the seat distibution in the Chamber of Deputies in 1885, that show widely varying group sizes. For 1898 even the total number of seats is different: In File:Assemblée législative 1898.svg, the chamber has 585 seats (as indicated in fr:Élections législatives françaises de 1898), while in your file it has 620 seats (as in fr:VIIe législature de la Troisième République française) and in File:Chambre des députés 1898 - groupes.svg even 624 seats. How can that be? (Also asking @Lematth88: . Thank you and kind regards, Bujo (talk) 13:47, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I @Bujo, this topic is just infinite. There might be some diagram (the one not used) that could be removed from Wikimedia. But concerning the question of colors, it still in discussion since a long time and might move later to be uniformized. And for discrepancies, its just because its the 19th century and depending on how you count (and so sources) its not the same. There is some diagram that are just wrong but other are different by sources and/or different time and user. Lematth88 (talk) 14:00, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lematth88: Thank you for your explanation. If different sources disagree with each other on the number of deputies and size of each group, it is especially important to indicate the source used in the file description (which is unfortunately not the case for most of these files). Otherwise it is impossible for other users who want to embed a diagram in a Wikipedia article to identify which source was used (which is crucial for en:Wikipedia:Verifiability). Also if the colour scheme is inconsistent, it is very important to add a key to each file clarifying which colour represents which group. Otherwise these nice diagrams are sadly of little use. --Bujo (talk) 15:16, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
