Matter[edit]
• Matter is anything that has mass and volume. • Is composed of atoms, which are then composed of "elementary particles": protons, neutrons, and electrons. NB: Mass is a measure of an object's inertia.
:Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up.
STATES OF MATTER
1. Solid
2. Liquid
3. Gas
• Based upon particle arrangement
• Based upon energy of particles
• Based upon distance between particles
SOLID
• Particles are tightly packed(in a regular pattern)
• Vibrating about a fixed position( but do not move from place to place)
• Have a definite shape & definite volume
LIQUID
• Particles are tightly packed but are far apart to slide over one another( close together with no arrangement )
• Have an indefinite shape and definite volume
• Vibrate, move and slide past each other
GAS
• Particles are very far apart ( well separated with no regular arrangement )
• Have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume
• Vibrate and move freely at high speeds
