Thiersch's illustrations of Alexandrian tombs

[edit]

Hi Not-A-Kitty. I'm leaving this here so as not to clog up the thread on the Village Pump copyright page any further, since now that we know that the paintings were published in 1904, any copyright problems evaporate. Still, you're right to be wary about differences between the TUM images and the published plates of Thiersch's drawings: successive versions of the same painting by the same painter can sometimes be sufficiently different that they qualify for separate copyright protection. And when paintings are engraved for publication (the usual practice before the 20th century), the engravings are always separate creative works, no matter how closely the engraver follows the original. Happily, the illustrations in Zwei antike Grabanlagen appear to be direct reproductions of Thiersch's original paintings, and the TUM versions with the scribbles in the margins are actually proofs of the plates published in that book. (The "scribbles" are instructions to the printer about color, shading, and other aspects of the reproduction.) So I agree that in this case you're probably safe in treating them as the "same" as the published plates. If you do upload the TUM versions, I would suggest using {{PD-Scan|PD-old-auto-expired|deathyear=1917}} as the license; the PD-Scan wrapper provides an extra layer of information and explains why you are treating the TUM's image as PD in spite of the restrictions that they assert on their website. And it would be helpful if you also include somewhere in your description a link to the Heidelberg scan of the published book, both to prove publication for anyone who may question it, and to help out readers who want to know more about Thiersch's work. But that's just my opinion. Cheers, Choliamb (talk) 03:10, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, that's very helpful :)! For now I've uploaded some of the book plates from the Heidelberg scan but those do, of course, have the usual printing artefacts. I'll keep all of this in mind if I decide to risk it with the TUM versions. Thanks again :)! Not-A-Kitty (talk) 17:04, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
