Thank you for your contributions...

[edit]

Hi @Slyronit, thanks a lot for your valuable contributions to Wikimedia Commons! Maybe you've already noticed that i've modified some details regarding categorisation and the geolocations. Handling categories on Commons isn't quite easy on Commons - to keep Categorisation useful, it's important to pay attention to the guidelines regarding categories. Thus, i've did some moditications in two regards:

  • Use the most specific category instead of broad metacategories: Applying the category Churches or even Buildings is in almost all cases inapproriate; those objects can be categorized by location, and famous churches or other buildings often have their own category on Commons. To find them, the easiest way is to search for the building by name on Wikipedia or Wikidata and check if there's a link to commons. Directly searching on commons may be helpful, too. You might also try to "guess" the parent category (for example, Churches in Prague) and check if there's a subcategory for your media.
  • Avoid Overcategorisation. Categories on Commons aren't "key words" thatt are independent from each other, but part of a hierarchical structure. If you've assigned the most specific category available, usually it isn't useful to additionally add one of its parent categories. For example, Prague in the 2010s is a subcategory of Czechia in the 2010s. It's quite easy to search for all media inside a category including its subcategories, thus explicitly adding the subcategories isn't the correct way (otherwise, the parent categories would contain hundreds of thousands of pics, making them unusable).

Another detail: Adding {{location}} information is great, but the coordinates should be sufficiently precise. In an urban environment, coordinates pointing to a place that's some kilometers away from the depicted location is simply useless. People relying on such misleading information would be quite frustrated... so, if you add coordinates, please make sure (e.g. using the great Locator Tool) that Object location and camera location are sufficiently precise. It's easy to find media that lacks geocoding completely, but it's very hard to identify wrong geocoding. Please don't get me wrong, i hope you'll continue contributing to commons - i myself learned a lot from other user's comments and advices! Have a nice day!
