Wisconsin State Legislator pictures
[edit]Hello to anyone who comes to help, I, and another person, have been wondering whether images from https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/2023/legislators/senate and https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/2023/legislators/assembly can actually be used, and whether they are usable within copyright/fair use (at least within the United States). - When you say "can actually be used," do you mean can they be uploaded to Commons, or can you use them in some other context? I'm sure there are many contexts in which they could be used (especially at that small scale) on a fair use basis, but not on Commons.
- I see no reason to think any of these images can be used on Commons. Since March 1, 1989, pretty much any photo taken in the U.S. (unless taken by a federal government employee acting in their professional capacity) is "born copyrighted." A few states (Florida, for example, but not Wisconsin as far as I know) effectively place all images taken by their state government employees in the public domain. Nothing on either of the pages you link seems to provide any indication of an sort of free license, and Commons does not allow images on a "fair use" basis. - Jmabel ! talk 04:00, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
