Local identifier on NARA images

I'm trying to identify the river or at least the region in File:CREEK MEANDERS AND OXBOWS TYPICAL OF THIS GENERAL AREA - NARA - 550543.jpg. I might be a lot closer if I knew where this lay in the set. Date does not help; the whole set by Dennis Cowals is dated 08/1973 without specifying the day. The NARA database has an entry called Local Identifier that does not always make it to Wiki. Do you know what it is? Is there a way to get the set of Cowals images sorted by Local identifier? This issue comes up a lot for Documerica images that were intended to be viewed as sets; the individual descriptions presume you already know what and where the set is about. Maybe this approach (ie using the local identifier field) could be useful in other instances.

Also, is there a Documerica talk page anywhere?

Thanks, Dankarl (talk) 23:21, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

That's a great idea. Local identifiers should always be in the metadata when uploaded, but it's true we don't even have a separate field for it, so it's difficult to do much with it on Commons. In NARA's catalog, you can look at the items for the whole series and sort by local identifier, and then jump to the page around when this local identifier occurs. I think this URL should be stable: [1]. Using your suggestion, the next item in the list is of "Dall River". Dominic (talk) 23:47, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. The info proved helpful in categorizing by location. Dankarl (talk) 00:02, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

ArchiveBot

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. GLAMwiki toolset

Hi Dominic,

Congratulations on becoming a user of the GLAMwiki Toolset. You can find some frequently asked questions and helpful links for using the tool at GLAMwiki Toolset. As your first step, please add yourself to the list of users at GWToolset users and follow the good practice of creating pages explaining your new projects, as these can help create a focus for our wider community of volunteers. A standard place to set up a project page is at Batch uploading, though long term GLAM programmes may fall under GLAM. To discuss the tool with fellow users, please join the email list GLAMtools or try chatting at #wikimedia-commons webchat. SteinsplitterBot (talk) 11:23, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Please use int:license-header instead of the outdated int:license in image description pages (the Licensing Header). So no need for additional Bot runs to fix this. Thank you. --Denniss (talk) 11:48, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Denniss, Thanks for letting me know. Also, thank you for doing some cleanup on the recent bot uploads. I'm sorry if it looked like I was being careless and making a mess. Actually, I am still working out the kinks on a new script, and I was planning on going back and fixing the galleries and red-linked categories of the test cases all at once. That's why I have only uploaded a few dozen in recent weeks, not a large batch. I will make sure the licensing header is changed to the new form before I do any big uploads. Dominic (talk) 18:34, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Dominic, I cleaned up all the sub categories to use {{UncategorizedHeader-NARA}}. Could you please use that for any future categories? Multichill (talk) 11:34, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Dominic, It seems like this file might have been uploaded in reverse. Looking at the name on the sign below the tree, "General Sherman" is backwards / a mirror image. I wonder if other images (from slides?) in this set could have also been uploaded in reverse. Thanks for your efforts! Tucoxn (talk) 00:46, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

This is the wrong image for the metadata. The metadata is for National Archives Identifier 513343, but the image is from National Archives Identifier 513330.--Jclingerman (talk) 14:49, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Still no movement on solving Wikisource issue

Per previous discussion at User_talk:Jarekt#Reverting_NARA_templated_edit_solves_nothing User_talk:Jarekt/2014#Reverting_NARA_templated_edit_solves_nothing

This 'sending-folks-to-Wikisource-to-transcribe-works-that-are-really-photos' thing is still not resolved.

The current scheme makes a selection depending on what file type is detected (TIFF). This approach is problematic - a .png/.jpg/.tiff/etc. can be a photo of the president or a diagram map of a state park just as much they can be they graphic representations of paper documents (i.e. a scanned page). Its insane to try and "guess" what the actual file content is just by the file extension. And trying to carve out Series or Record Group ranges for each type of products is just as crazy imho.

Why not route just the files originating from the Textual/Reference records division to Wikisource?

* An example of a Photographs or other graphic materials - HERE
The types are listed in the Type(s) of Archival Materials: field (2nd row, details tab)

Although I'm not 100% sure about it, I believe the various NARA & Presidential Library entities & their "codes" are already listed somewhere no? -- George Orwell III (talk) 00:12, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

@George Orwell III: The approach I took initially was to apply the button to every image, to serve just as an easy tool to jump right into a Wikisource transcription if you wanted. That requires some discretion on the part of the editor. Restricting it to TIFFs wasn't an attempt to guess anything by file extension at all, it was just a way to exclude duplicates (we are uploading both TIFF and JPG versions of the same images).
Basically, I think the answer is that your approach is possible, but would require some programming work, and changes across all the 100,000+ uploaded files. Ideally, we should rely on the medium field, not the location. The location field might be roughly equivalent for things in the textual branch of the main NARA facility, but other facilities like the presidential libraries do not have separate branches, and a location like "Truman Library" could have materials of any type. The problem is that we did not import the medium metadata field in the original import, though I have planned for a while to fix that in the future. Similarly, I want to at some point develop a better workflow for ensuring we aren't creating orphaned proofread pages, and that might involve automatically creating index pages based on the Commons metadata. (And cleaning up all the existing orphans, of course.) I'm still looking for someone with who can code in python to help with our code, though; the last time we had help with coding it was from a temporary intern in my office who has since left.
If you feel strongly about it, I would recommend you simply hide the transcribe button on all pages until we can make the changes above to add the needed complexity to the workflow so we don't create messes on Wikisource. It might be a question for the Scriptorium, though, to see if anyone else cares enough about the button to help out or thinks it's better to have the buttons on all images than none.
