First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Friday[edit]

Hi Dina, I'm happy to hear from you- I'm getting tired of all of the 'you deleted my _______' messages that I get at Wikipedia, so stop by any time, at my talkpage either here or there. I often spend time here, because its a little quieter, though I don't do much. You're lucky that you got a {{Welcome}} here, I never got one :-( and what is more old skool than your name there is that you got your welcome message there from Angela. How did you pick your name here by the way? I've never been to MockBa so I look forward to Friday. DVD R W 22:46, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was expecting hundreds and there are only three, I'm disappointed. Just kidding I really like them, will you upload more? You can place these in en:Kiosk, en:Beer_and_nationality#Russia or maybe just en:Beer, and en:Graffiti - but you knew that already. See ya later, DVD R W 04:33, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cats and galleries[edit]

Dina, the cats here are Commons only, and don't apply to other wikis. There are motions to send images over here, such as CSD I9, and though there are some drawbacks, and though personally I have uploaded most of my images to en:, I put any of my new ones here and intend to bring the old ones eventually as well. Unfortunately, in the Toolbox Special:What links here at the Commons there isn't shown anything from the other wikis so hopping between different language wikis isn't done that way. There is the check usage tab at the top of any image file that runs through the toolserver, that does a similar thing to help find where they are already placed, so it it's ok afterall. All the different wikis are like islands or some other metaphor denoting a degree of separation. The things I suggested yesterday were articles for the images, not cats. Find the existing Commons cats or galleries (as articles are often called here), or you can start new ones when you wish. You are doing fine license wise, you could have used {{PD-self}} instead but so much on the wikis is based on GFDL, such as text contributions, that to choose it for images seems to me to be more consistent. The titles are up to you. You can add anything you want to them or the file info. Adding translations and descriptions are worth considering. Does this help? I'm new here too so keep that in mind. chapel pictures[edit]

Make sure you get some that show it from the outside as a drum, close to what architects call elevations. And also some that show the rainbows from the prisms. And make a gallery. These are very beautiful, I'm really impressed. DVD R W 21:38, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re: jelly fish[edit]

that license doesn't fit the picture. DVD R W 23:00, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
