Baltic blooms
  • One of them (down by the south tip of the main island) is the shadow of a contrail. The contrail is also in the photo. The rest are made by boats. You can see that they end in white dots=boats. These algae are very sluggish and move rather slowly with the currents. The swirly patterns take several hours to form, often a day or so. So when a boat makes a swat through the algae, it takes a while for it to close. From the shore, this algae looks like someone took crushed moss and scattered in the sea. During the bloom, the local radio station/website has a daily report about what bays and beaches are algae-infested and not.
