Rinaldo Rigoni "Moretto" |
Description |
English: Rinaldo Rigoni "Moretto" was born on 17 June 1923 in Asiago, son of Maria and Andrea Giovanni Rigoni, he has 9 brothers, he collected milk for the social cheese factory, he made the scavenger at leisure time. Renewer to the announcements of enrollment of the R.S.I. In the spring of 1944 he became part of the "little masters" or "banda del Toni", based in Malga Fossetta. Knowing the mountains well, he led the group of partisans of Antonio Giuriolo. Moretto sometimes came home at night in the district of Rigoni di Sotto (today Bar Masiero, above the Asiago airport) for clothing and food. He died in combat on June 5, 1944 at the Castelloni di San Marco, he was 20 years old. After the war, Rigoni Stern, returned from captivity, was part of the group that recovered the body of Moretto and other partisans fallen like him in that place. His funeral took place on 6 June 1945. He was awarded a silver medal for Military Valor on 3 October 1952.
The death of Moretto is mentioned in "I piccoli maestri" ("The Outlaws") of Luigi Meneghello (1964). We find an accurate description of its history, including what happened after the war in an evocative story by Mario Rigoni Stern, "Un ragazzo delle nostre contrade" ("A boy of our districts"), contained in "Ritorno sul Don" (The Return to the Don River, 1973).
