Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Categorization[edit]

I appreciate you transferring free images from iNaturalist. When you do so, please make sure to only add the most specific categories - for example, the category for the specific town or preserve rather than for California. See here for an example of me refining the categories on an image you uploaded. If you have any questions about how to do this, feel free to respond here or on my talk page. Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:24, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While I can see the point of not using the general category "Arctostaphylos", I'm not a plant expert and none of the other categories you chose show up on the wikipedia page for that plant? It's described as "endemic to the sandhills of the southern Santa Cruz Mountains in California's Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties". Hence my category choice of "Santa Cruz Mountains" to include both Santa Clara and Santa Cruz (I just looked up Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and it doesn't include Santa Clara County). I'll try to avoid duplicating general and specific, as I did with Arctostaphylos, but please feel free to keep improving on my uploads with more accurate categories. The location categories for an image should reflect that specific image, not the species as a whole. In this case, the iNaturalist page specifies that the photo was taken in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:18, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I understand now! Nathank2 (talk) 02:39, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
