Administrative vandalism

[edit]

Perhaps if you understood copyright law you would have not deleted the photo of William G. Wilson with baseball great Stan Musial from the article on William George Wilson. The photo is over 60 years old and is in the public domain. It really irks me that individuals such as you vandalize the hard work of conscientious contributors. Having worked in the legitimate media for most of my life it annoys me to witness the destruction at the hands of wannabe Wikipedia editors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by W3BIG (talk • contribs) 22:52, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lol, if you want my help, you should probably ask nicely. Try again when you're ready. Cheers, FASTILY (TALK) 23:11, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
First, W3BIG, aside from being more civil, please sign your posts by adding four tildes ~~~~ on the end -- this adds your user name and a date stamp.
Second, it is always helpful to provide a link to the problem, rather than forcing the reader to track it down, in this case File:Bill_Wilson_with_Stan_Musial.jpg.
Third, may I respectfully suggest that you learn our rules and copyright law a little better? The subject image is tagged PD-AUTHOR, which means that the author has submitted it to Commons and placed it in the public domain. It is also marked "Unknown photographer". It should be obvious that it cannot be both.
The photograph was taken in 1958. Since any work made after 1891 may be under copyright in the USA, your rant above has no basis. It is, of course, entirely possible that it had no notice or that its copyright was not renewed, but proving that would take a lot of work. It is equally possible that it sat unpublished for the intervening time in a family scrapbook, in which case it will be under copyright until 2078.
When you uploaded the image you provided no source information. If we knew where you got the image, we might better be able to assess its status. The fact that you said nothing about source suggests -- but certainly does not prove -- that it comes from a source that will not support the PD claim.
The image was tagged on November 3, 2010 as missing permission. It could have been deleted on November 10. Instead, you let it sit with a missing permission tag for almost five months and then complain when the warning in that tag comes true.
Finally, as for "wannabe Wikipedia editors" -- three experienced Wikimedia Commons Administrators (Fastily, Davepape, and myself) have looked at this image and all believe that the deletion was appropriate.
Rather than ranting at my colleague, if you want this image kept, I suggest you supply your entire history with the image -- where you got it and from who. It is possible that we can find a way to keep it, but insulting rants won't make that happen.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:25, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
