GIMPy childrens pics[edit]

Hi Barefoot,

Following up on your question on the Village pump, I just realised that your question about GIMP editing was probably about trying to get a flat white background to help image compression reduce the file size. I don't have any exprience of GIMP, but in other image editing packages there is usually a command to adjust the 'levels' between black, white and all colours in between. In this case you would probably be looking to pull down the white end of the scale so more of the light colour pixels come out pure white.

However, the choice of file type and compression will probably have a bigger effect on the file size. For images such as these, which are essentially line art with large areas of flat colour, .png is a good choice. But it needs to be 8bit png encoding with an adaptive colour palette. 24bit png hardly compresses a file at all. -- Solipsist 18:58, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with Solipsist. Please don't convert your images from 24 bit to 8 bit simply to save a few kilobytes. Image:Child Art Aged 2.5 Blue Fish Large and Small.png is only 128K, and hard drives are cheap. dbenbenn | talk 22:25, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
