Replace pyramid[edit]

Hey, I saw that you added an animated pyramid to the US demographics page. I'd like to replace it with something I've been working on that has a bit more detail. Is that OK?--Tallungs (talk) 04:29, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Tallungs! Yes feel free to replace mine with yours it looks great, mine are mostly there for filler in-till more detailed animated population pyramids are created anyway but thank you for messaging me nonetheless. Tweedledumb2 (talk) 21:16, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for spotting this, this error (hopefully if the file and the other file associated has gone through correctly) has been corrected. Tweedle (talk) 23:27, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Category for Population pyramids of Japan by prefecture[edit]

Hi, thanks for many posting for Population pyramids of Japan by prefecture. But could you use Category:Demographics of Japan by prefecture category, instead of Category:Demographics of Japan. appricately. --Yuasan (talk) 09:41, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Yuasan Got it, apologises for that I think I must have uploaded them in bulk and did not see that category. Have they been changed around or would you like me to do that? Tweedle (talk) 23:36, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done! :) Tweedle (talk) 19:15, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks for a fast positive work. --Yuasan (talk) 06:21, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! :) Tweedle (talk) 10:58, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rather upload as new[edit]

Hi, when updating graphs for newer year, it is better to create a new file. So instead of overwriting File:London population pyramid estimate 2020.svg, it is better to upload as a new file named, say, File:London population pyramid estimate 2021.svg. See Commons:Overwriting existing files. Thanks —Vis M (talk) 16:12, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Vis M OK I can for newer files which have a source change like this but I usually like to update the files rather then upload for a couple reasons being that; 1 - The source does not change on the predominant amount, 2; it is quicker then having to individually go over each page which has it in and change it around, 3 - the changes do not change it by much, just updating the file and 4; it saves a massive clog (on my Upload page) of not used files for each individual year when they could be put into one file and updated regularly (the previous versions being in the file history section.). I guess this would come under minor improvements.
Should I add the {Current} tag to my files? That way they are clearly marked to be updated regularly, again the vast majority do not change source data and don't really need an individual new file for each adjustment. Thanks, Tweedle (talk) 16:44, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that's fine. Yes, you can add the {{Current}} tag, that would be the best option. Thanks —Vis M (talk) 16:54, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Interested in your data/graphs[edit]

Hey man, I've seen your graphs repeatedly across the different demographic topics here on wikipedia. Very nice work! I'd like to see more of what you've got, is it anywhere available? Maybe a blog? Or maybe we can talk and you can send it to me somewhere? MrThe1And0nly (talk) 18:15, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@MrThe1And0nly Hello! Thank you for the kind words! They do mean alot. I don't actually have a website other then outside here no! Maybe I should set one up.. If you want to view all my images, I recommending going to my uploads page on here, I don't think there is a single thing that I have created atleast pertaining to demography which I have not uploaded to here anyhow, you can find it here! Tweedle (talk) 09:33, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was mainly curious whether you have the data of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Population_pyramid_of_the_world_in_continental_groupings_2023.svg
But in the form of:
1) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Complete_history_of_the_Racial_and_ethnic_demographics_of_the_United_States_in_percentage_of_the_population.svg
or
2) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ethno-racial_makeup_of_the_United_States_by_single_year_ages_in_2020.svg
And whether you happen to have some data on the history of worldwide population by race/ethnicity? MrThe1And0nly (talk) 18:13, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MrThe1And0nly Ah on that front no, sorry. Ethnicity statistics suffer because the vast majority of countries worldwide don't actually produce them. To take prominent examples, western continental Europe stands out for this as none do any sort of statistics on such. A large amount do go off of what's called 'Origin' statistics (which is basically based on your country of birth and your parents country of birth) which can be used as a form of proxy for it but ethnicity specifically they do not do.
I mean you could possibly trall through each Demography page on Wikipedia to get each countries statistics then amalgamate them but I am not sure if all are up to date. The continental groupings/countries which do I know for sure do some form of race and ethnicity statistics atleast are: South America, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean countries, the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, China, Indonesia and Mongolia (there may be more but this is off the top of my head)
Additionally, you could interpret also based off of the world continental groupings data from the World Population Prospects, grouping certain areas together to get a rough approximate for broader groups. For example, group India, Pakistan etc. to get South Asians, group Europe to get Europeans etc. etc. Ofcourse this suffers from ignoring regional diversity and the population statistics are total population so are not inherently great figures but it gives an estimate anyway. Tweedle (talk) 19:47, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah the data is a bit hidden. Would have to rely a lot on historical as well as conjectural statements. Thanks for the tips. I'll see when I get around to digging in. Lucky for me, I'm mostly interested in centuries back. Particularly the change in ethnic proportions in regards to European expansion and colonisations way back when. MrThe1And0nly (talk) 07:56, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! Happy I could help to some degree and sorry I could not offer any more sources on what to use. I would also check Google Scholar or JSTOR (for Primary sources you can filter at the side on a search) for results (this is assuming you haven't already but I presume you probably have), there should atleast be some amount of scholarly articles which would atleast deal with the topic in areas which they did collect or then went on to collect race data in terms of estimates, like Latin America and other colonised areas etc. if that is what your looking into. A large portion of estimations I did for a variety of British towns/cities came from trawling (excessively!) through there! Tweedle (talk) 09:30, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Population projections for one of your graphs[edit]

Here’s some data you can use to add population projections to your graph on race/ ethnicity in the US.

Here’s another good source for similar statistics on immigration to the US.

Liked your similar graph on London population by race/ ethnicity. Raquel Baranow (talk) 18:11, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Raquel Baranow Ah perfect thank you and thank you for the kind words! I'll add these to the file, but do you know if the Census Bureau has done any recent projections on race/ethnicity in America since the 2020 census? I did see a projection report which I believe is the same one here but I did not add it in prior because the figures were off for 2020 projections and the figures for 2030 to close to the actual number of the 2020 census to be correct for what it most likely will be, but I will add these regardless though. Thanks, Tweedle (talk) 08:42, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Don’t know of any more recent stats. I was surprised about the Census Bureau immigration report and thought maybe it was published only because Trump was President. Population statistics along with climate change and pollution are two of my favorite subjects, I follow many scientists and research centers on Twitter and if I find anything new, I’ll let you know. Also saw your London graph on Twitter. It would help (for sharing on Twitter, etc) if you added captions or headers to your graphs. Raquel Baranow (talk) 17:33, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Raquel Baranow Ah ok no worries on that front then, they have done previous reports to be fair before, here is one from in 2014 which, ironically, is under an image you uploaded!
Maybe I should create a Twitter account so I can share the most recent stuff I create, also what do you mean precisely (then I can add) by adding captions or headers, my one on Wikipedia (unless they cropped it off on Twitter) has a header (but has little captions outside the description of the colours alas). Tweedle (talk) 19:28, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the population pyramid header looks good. Your London ethnicity pie chart had no header indicating what it was so someone added “London” to the bottom, left. (Your US ethnicity pie chart lacks a header too.) Since I follow a lot of people who oppose immigration (overpopulation) I see many such graphs on Twitter. Raquel Baranow (talk) 16:19, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Raquel Baranow Ah gotcha, OK I'll tweak those then thanks for that. I believe I did not add it in because I had a lack of room but if people are having to explain which piechart is for which elsewhere on other sites I'll change that around! Tweedle (talk) 18:49, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

UK Smoking Rates Graph[edit]

I think the axes on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smoking_consumption_over_time_for_all_adults_in_the_United_Kingdom.svg are misleading.

The X axis switches from being 10 year increments to 5 year increments, with one 8 year increment, but the scale of the axis remains the same.

The Y axis is oddly scaled to crop out the bottom 10%, suggesting that the percentage of smokes is lower than it is. It maxing out at 50% also isn't great, but this seems sort of reasonable given it would double the height of the graph.

These things combined make the data difficult to clearly read and understand. I think something more like the graph on https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-61718468 would be clearer. Moff181 (talk) 16:53, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

OK you are free to change it around yourself. I do not have time atm to make changes, the excel file and source is attached on the page so why not make your own and upload over it Tweedle (talk) 22:51, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
