Finding place by id number

Sorry, I've been unable to figure out how to find out where/what something is simply by ID number. Where is a list? (Some photos have no description, only id #; I click on the id number link and it opens up the heritage toolforge org in a new tab, but that never uploads an actual page with info for me. I've tried with multiple browsers. I wish to categorize mystery photos.) Thanks, puzzled Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:12, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Could you maybe link an example of a page you are looking at?
Things may work differently on different projects, so just to be sure. Ciell (talk) 21:32, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

@Ciell: For example File:SUBIDA_A_LA_CAMARINA.JPG, File:Oficinas_Estatales_6119.png. Instead of text identification of what and where are shown in the photo, they have description "This is a photo of a monument in Mexico, identified by ID" followed by a number which is a web link. I've tried opening such links in multiple browsers, logged in and not, and never gotten any page with information to load. Thanks. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 21:31, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Mexico is a difficult case. This is supposed to be their collection of the lists of monuments, but specifically Yucatan list does not exist. On the other hand, the ID must have come from somewhere, but so far I was not able to figure out where from. I vaguely remember using their IDs for Mexico City myself in 2014, the lists were fine. Ymblanter (talk) 05:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
Yes, I'm guessing the 'monument ID number' must have come from *somewhere*, but *where*? Any chance that information can be located? Let me strongly suggest that "Wiki Love Monuments" participants should be encouraged to include text information about what individual photos show! Otherwise, we may wind up with more and more mysterious photos that could show something significant, but are only identified with some number which no one is able to decypher after the fact. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:21, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Final report and how is monument defined?

Hi, I read your interim report and was wondering if there was any update on when the final report would be available? Australia hasn't taken part in WLM recently because of some of the issues raised, and how monuments were defined. As alluded to on the 2019 Australian page, Indigenous heritage sites were accepted as part of the Australian competition but these entries might not have been accepted to the international competition.

I have been in discussion with Wikimedia Australia members, and some would like better clarity over how a 'monument' is defined before taking part so that Indigenous Australian monuments won't be disqualified. Thank you.

Jimmyjrg (talk) 06:11, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Jimmyjrg,
Monuments are allowed in the 2022 competition as long as they have been appointed by governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations or other verified (trustworthy!) sources. I hope this already helps in including the Australian indigenous heritage sites!
For the DEI report: there were some unforseen delays, but the international team received the final report today. We need a week, maybe two to review, and after that we have translators on stand-by to support in translating the document. I hope we can publish the final report before the end of September. Ciell (talk) 20:18, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply! I'll let everyone know. Jimmyjrg (talk) 02:29, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

metrics WLM

Hi team,

Since I am new to WLM and also new to online metrics, I was wondering if you have any documentation, manuals or tips on generating metrics for WLM. Thank you so much! MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 12:52, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Michelle,
Yes, we do! This question is answered in the WLM FAQ here. There is a lot of documentation available under Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Documentation: though some pages might be a bit out-of-date for the WLM 2022 competition there are still many stories from past editions that can inspire you in setting up your competition for the current year. Ciell (talk) 11:00, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks so much Ciell, very helpful! MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 11:27, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Ciell (Pinging @ThamaraGroenleer), following up on this question: If I view the WLM tool, I only see Brasil as a participant for 2022. Do we still need to do something to add our country there or will this be done automatically? MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 13:43, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi @MichellevL (WMNL), no this kind of data will all become available once we open the uploadcampaigns. Ciell (talk) 20:07, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Ciell, great, thanks you so much! MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 13:00, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Using other people's photos

I've just opened Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Anarchia99xxx to delete two years' worth of copyright violation photos, from a user who appears to have been uploading the same bunch of photos found online to enter the Wiki Loves Monuments competition in September 2021 and 2022, in the hope of a cash prize.

Should we be concerned that (a) the WLM app they were using didn't pick up on the low resolutions and lack of EXIF in any way, and (b) that no human judge checked whether the photos were taken from other sources in 2021? Lord Belbury (talk) 18:14, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi Lord Belbury,
I don't know if there is a foolproof way to check for copyright violations. There is no fundamental difference in how people submit to Wiki Loves Monuments than how they make regular uploads. The judges are usually not expected to verify the copyright status, but at least internationally, we often manually check the top ranked images whether they appear elsewhere as well. It would be great if we could automate reverse image search somehow, and post that - but I suspect if that were possible, this would have been the case already on Commons. Regarding the Wiki Loves Monuments Contest

Hi,

I am the Coordinator of an institution in Palanpur, Gujarat. I would like my students to enter this contest, and I have gathered that there is no age restriction for this. My students from Std. 6-11 would love to send their entries if it is possible according to your rules, so could you please guide me if I can go ahead with the plan or otherwise?

Thanks

Jzzdzzl10 (talk) 09:48, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

@Jzzdzzl10: Indeed, we do not have age restrictions. Your students must create Wikimedia accounts, and my personal advise would be not to use real names in the account names. Ymblanter (talk) 10:09, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
@Bodhisattwa and Amitabha Gupta: you may want to follow up with the user above. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:12, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Kovaleva M (talk) 14:00, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

-- Alexander 15:42, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Спасибо, Александр! Карандаш не заметила из-за невнимательности). Теперь все ок. Хорошего дня! 37.78.234.135 06:52, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

Should every monument have a Wikimedia category created for it?

Hi, Congratulations on WLM, which is an excellent initiative!

My concern is about how to find media files that relate to a particular Listed Building or Scheduled Monument. There is always a Wikidata entry for that monument, but often there is no Wikimedia category for the monument. It seems to me that if there is no category for the monument, then there is no easy way to find all the media files related to that monument.

I noticed this first in connection with the red pins on the map for Listed Buildings in England. Back in 2019, I contributed a number of images to WLM for places with red pins (indicating that no images had been contributed). I notice now that some of those places still have red pins three years later.

My suggestion would be that categories should be created for all monuments in the same way that Wikidata entries are created. I have no idea whether that is practical or not, I am not an expert.

Anyway, I would be interested to hear your views on this matter - it's possible that I have completely misunderstood the way Wikimedia and Wikidata work!

Regards, Tom

Tom Axford 1 (talk) 10:29, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion Tom! It is not mandetory to have a seperate Commons category for every listed monument, but I agree it can improve the general navigation. Pinging Richard Nevell (WMUK) here for the country specific suggestion. Ciell (talk) 09:30, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping, Ciell, and it's a good question @Tom Axford 1. At the moment, categories are created manually when there are a few images to group together, ie: two or three images of the same place or thing. It relies on someone noticing there are several related images and grouping them together.
In theory, it might be possible to create a category for every single listed building or scheduled monument to help structure thigs but there would be a lot of empty categories. The data is structured, so using a bot to create a lot of categories could work, but it may need community consensus since potentially hundreds of thousands of categories would have to be created. It does sound possible though.
I think the ideal process would be: an image is uploaded to the competition, and it is automatically linked to the corresponding Wikidata item and given the category for that place. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 08:55, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

WLM upload problem

Good evening, I succefully uploaded several photos for the contest. Unfortunately one of these at the ID Q113493395 12H2820032, I can not load it as it is appear duplicated. This surprises me because if I go to look for the photo in the list (to its ID) I cannot find it. This is the photo "Despair in the War Memorial ..."

Roberto_WLM (talk) 21:21, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi Roberto Barone ph,
The monuments lists on the different language Wikipedia's are updated manually by volunteers after bot suggestions. This means that it may take a while before your upload actually appears in the on-wiki list. Pinging Dario Crespi (WMIT) here for the country specific question about the duplicate. Ciell (talk) 09:36, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much Ciell, the photo look well uploaded now. 93.42.70.144 15:09, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

WLM BIC Code question

Hi, when uploading a photo for Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 (Spain), where do I add the BIC code? Thanks in advance. Javi.cavi (talk) 15:04, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Javi.cavi, let me see if the coordinator for Spain can help you here. @Rubén Ojeda (WMES), would you be able to help? Ciell (talk) 18:37, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Adding existing image in new category

Good morning,

I accidentally loaded two images onto Wiki, however I meant to load them into Wiki Loves Monuments Aruba 2022. Now it won't let me reload them since they already "exist" in the Data. What can I do to add them in the Wiki Loves monuments 2022 Aruba?

Ricardo de Vreede (talk) 14:08, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Ricardo de Vreede, we can help you add them. Which two uploads of yours are you referring to? Ciell (talk) 18:40, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
