本書寫成於1901年至1902年,著者用今文經學的公羊三世說和《禮記·禮運篇》大同思想,揉合了歐洲空想社會主義、資產階級民主思想與達爾文的進化論,描繪出一個「無邦國、無帝王、人人平等、天下為公」理想的大同社會,表達了康有為的社會政治理想及其哲學、政治觀點。全書分為10部分,甲部:入世界觀眾苦,乙部:去國界合大地,丙部:去級界平民族,丁部:去種界同人類;戊部:去形界保獨立,已部:去家界為王民,庚部:去戶界公生產,辛部:去亂界治太平,壬部:去類界愛眾生,癸部:去苦界至極樂
