本冊分上中下三編,每編一冊。上編為古史傳說統論,收文2篇,為顧頡剛的《戰國秦漢間人的造偽與辨偽》、楊寬的《中國上古史導論》。中編為有關「三皇五帝考」的論文,收文7篇。其中有呂思勉的《三皇五帝考》顧頡剛、楊向奎、童書業三人合著的《三皇考》、齊思和的《黃帝之制器故事》等。下編為有關「唐虞史考」的論文,收文14篇。其中有童書業的《「帝堯陶唐氏」名號溯源》、顧頡剛的《禪讓傳說起於墨家考》、呂思勉的《唐虞夏史考》、郭沫若的《古史辨》等
