全書共3編。第一編為緒論,分三章說明中國史籍的地位、分類及其演變;史體及史家三體之得失;紀傳體史之遞增;通古斷代之異、私撰官修之分等。第二編為本論,將廿五史依次分為25章,逐史加以考證,凡屬私撰均詳考作者生平,及編修情況。如屬官修,考其纂修過程。對各史的紀、傳、表、志等均有專述。《清史稿》未入正編只是附於編後。第三編為結論,分析各史得失。書後附廿五史各種表7個,及李詳、陸紹明在《國粹學報》上發表的論文3篇

Works of Chinese origin that have entered the public domain in the U.S. due to certain circumstances (such as publication in noncompliance with U.S. copyright formalities) may have had their U.S. copyright restored under the Uruguay Round Agreements Act (URAA) if the work was under copyright in its country of origin on the date that the URAA took effect in that country. (For the People's Republic of China, the URAA took effect on January 1, 1996. For the Republic of China (ROC), the URAA took effect on January 1, 2002.[1])
